8:00 PM.

Military district training, large assembly.

This year, there are over two hundred freshmen from Capital University.

The sports field is brightly lit at night, with an occasional soft breeze sweeping through.

They are all dressed in their training uniforms, boys and girls mixed together, standing side by side.

Since they have all just arrived, they are still unfamiliar with one another. The environment is new and strange as well.

Each of them is filled with anticipation and curiosity.

The crowd is noisy and bustling.

At that moment, a young assistant instructor steps forward—the very same one who had checked the freshmen’s dormitory area that afternoon.

He stands there in a deep green camouflage uniform, a string around his neck holding what seems to be a whistle, and holds a loudspeaker as he addresses the group: “Listen up!”

“My surname is He. From today on, I am your instructor.”

“Here, I don’t care who you are—you must obey orders and arrangements.”

“And as for your freshman training, it won’t be too long or too short. It will last twelve days.”

“I hope that all of you can endure hardship, strive to improve, and aim to complete this training successfully. How does that sound?”

“Alright!”

“Today, we’ll start by gathering and dividing you into groups.”

After all, with over two hundred freshmen, and only a dozen or so instructors, each group would be managed by two instructors.

Only this way could the instructors guide everyone more effectively.

Thus, the group assignments began on the field.

Each instructor held a roster.

Whoever was called belonged to that instructor’s group.

By chance, Shen Zhaoxi was assigned to the same group as Gu Wan and Jiang Qiqi.

How unfortunate.

Hearing her name, followed by Gu Wan and Jiang Qiqi’s, Shen Zhaoxi found it utterly exasperating.

Her pale face expressionless, Shen Zhaoxi stood at the edge of the field, calmly observing the scene.

She was known for her short temper.

Faced with such a training scene, she truly wanted to teach them a lesson.

It was simply too chaotic.

Too noisy.

Too clamorous.

No trace of order or discipline!

Unacceptable.

Shen Zhaoxi could hardly stand it.

She pressed her lips tightly together, closed her eyes.

She chose to shut it all out.

On the other side, Jiang Qiqi’s voice rang out, full of disdain.

“How unlucky.”

“Why did we have to end up in the same group as her?”

Jiang Qiqi’s look of dislike was nearly tangible.

The person she disliked was none other than Zhou Zhou, their own roommate.

Most people would say that being grouped with your dormmates was a stroke of luck.

But not everyone felt that way.

Perhaps it was because Zhou Zhou’s family was not well-off.

Or perhaps it was her timid disposition.

She was far too timid.

It has always been true that the kind are easily bullied.

“Gu Wan, Qiqi, I didn’t expect we’d all be in the same group. I haven’t even had a chance to introduce myself to you yet,”

Zhou Zhou, with a timid expression, came over, her eyes glimmering with a hint of goodwill at the thought of being grouped with her dormmates.

“Who wants to be in the same group as you?”

Suddenly, Jiang Qiqi said bluntly, without the slightest courtesy.

“Go play with whoever you like.”

She had no intention of playing with someone like Zhou Zhou.

Gu Wan, seeing Zhou Zhou approach, offered only a polite smile.

Noticing Jiang Qiqi and Gu Wan’s attitudes, Zhou Zhou’s face fell, her expression embarrassed.

She stood there, awkward and at a loss for what to do.

She glanced over at Shen Zhaoxi, who was standing on the edge of the field, and at Zhong Qing in the crowd, who also frowned as she watched.

Because they were all in the same group, everyone was standing fairly close, and even if in separate spots, they could still see what was happening with Zhou Zhou.

“Alright, don’t block the way,” Jiang Qiqi said, and then dragged Gu Wan away.

Zhou Zhou’s face was nervous and fearful.

She cast her timid eyes around at everyone.

Shen Zhaoxi, expressionless, averted her gaze.

She acted as though nothing had happened.

After the groups were set, the instructor gave a few more instructions.

Then he told them to rest well tonight.

The real training would start the next day.

Back in the dorm that night, Xiao Xiao was absent.

She had left earlier that afternoon for personal matters.

So only Shen Zhaoxi and the other dormmates remained.

After her shower, Shen Zhaoxi, whose lower back had been bothering her, suddenly braced herself against the desk.

Her face was pale; it had been like this for a month now.

Though acupuncture had relieved the pressure on her spine and her nerves had recovered, there was still a lingering ache.

Zhong Qing was organizing her makeup bag when she noticed Shen Zhaoxi’s pallor and sensed that something was wrong.

She came over with concern, “Hey, are you alright?”

“You don’t look so well.”

Shen Zhaoxi gritted her teeth and endured the discomfort.

The pain eventually eased a little, and Shen Zhaoxi glanced at Zhong Qing, replying, “I’m fine.”

“Are you hypoglycemic?” Zhong Qing asked. “Or did you skip dinner? I haven’t eaten either. I still have some candy and buckwheat bread—would you like some?”

She had noticed Shen Zhaoxi’s pallor and assumed it was due to low blood sugar.

But that wasn’t the case.

Zhou Zhou only cast a frightened glance at them before taking her washbasin and leaving.

“No need, I’ll be fine after some rest,” Shen Zhaoxi said, feeling a little better.

She stood up and turned to see Zhong Qing at her side, frowning with worry.

“Are you sure you’re alright?”

Judging by Shen Zhaoxi’s appearance, she hardly seemed fine.

“I’m okay,” Shen Zhaoxi replied with a faint smile in her eyes. “Thank you.”

“No need to thank me—we’re roommates, it’s only right to care for you.”

Zhong Qing smiled as well.

She said, “I’m the same way sometimes.”

“Sometimes, if I forget to eat, my blood sugar drops and I get dizzy too.”

She’d assumed Shen Zhaoxi’s pallor was from dizziness.

Their conversation was brief.

Jiang Qiqi and the others had gone out to shower, so the dorm was unusually quiet.

Zhong Qing handed Shen Zhaoxi two candies and told her to keep them for later during the training.

“Take them—if your blood sugar drops again, you might faint.”

She spoke from experience.

It would be too late if she really did faint.

After ten o’clock, Jiang Qiqi and Gu Wan returned.

But the dorm’s peaceful atmosphere was broken.

“My necklace!”

Gu Wan searched her bed and her desk, but her necklace was nowhere to be found.

“My necklace is gone.”

“I remember I put it right here on the desk…”

Author’s note:

Training lasts only twelve days. Besides a few necessary plot points, other days may be skipped over in threes or fives.

So don’t worry, darlings.
