Chapter 72: So He Was Just a Driver
“Sis will take care of you,” she said.
Looking at Zhao Sijie’s proud expression, Xia Yu couldn’t help but laugh and cry. “Doesn’t that make me just like how your classmates described—a kept man living off a woman?”
“Mm, but you can be my kept man, just for me,” she teased.
“Alright, let me take you home so you can rest early. You have work tomorrow,” Xia Yu said with a gentle smile.
“Hmph.” Zhao Sijie looked visibly disappointed.
On the way back, she really was considering renting a place and bringing her mother to live with her. Since she brought it up, Xia Yu naturally patted his chest and promised to handle it.
Zhao Sijie smiled, not bothering to be polite with him, but before leaving, she insisted on stuffing ten thousand yuan into his hands, claiming it was for the rental deposit.
Xia Yu had no choice but to accept. When she got out of the car, she cheekily leaned over and asked, “Aren’t you going to give me a kiss?”
“Uh…” Xia Yu was at a loss.
“You’re such a blockhead.” Zhao Sijie pouted in disappointment, then helplessly pushed open the door and got out.
Xia Yu lit a cigarette, watching her enter the house and close the door. He couldn’t help but rub his face, then glanced at the clothes she’d given him.
Without realizing it, he thought again of Lin Yuqing, which made him feel both annoyed and guilty.
He and Zhao Sijie were together now, both had tacitly acknowledged their relationship, yet he kept thinking about another woman. It was unfair to her.
“Xia Yu, why can’t you control yourself?”
“Sijie, I’m sorry. Please give me a little more time…”
He tossed away the cigarette butt, then started the car and drove off.
Meanwhile, Zhao Sijie lay on her bed after her shower, holding the protective charm Xia Yu had given her, lost in thought.
She knew Xia Yu still needed time to adapt. ‘He said he liked Yuqing; it’s impossible for him to forget her so quickly.’
She understood a girl ought to be reserved, but under these circumstances, she knew only by actively being good to Xia Yu could she hope to make him forget Lin Yuqing and fall for her.
“Brother Yu, I hope you’ll come to love me completely, and see me as your woman…”
Zhao Sijie gazed at the charm, murmuring softly.
……
That day, Lin Yuqing was busy in the office when Li Hao walked in from outside.
“Why are you here?” Lin Yuqing asked in surprise.
“I heard you’ve been working nonstop, so I came to check on you,” Li Hao said gently, pulling out the chair opposite her.
“Sorry, I’ve just been… really busy these days, haven’t had time for you.”
Lin Yuqing forced a smile, but in truth she’d been deliberately avoiding Li Hao.
She thought agreeing to be with him might change things, but Lin Yuqing found that every time she was with Li Hao, even just talking on the phone, she felt uncomfortable, unnatural.
She disliked the feeling, so she could only keep her distance.
“I know you’re busy, but you still need to take care of yourself. Don’t make me worry,” Li Hao suddenly reached for her hand.
Lin Yuqing pulled her hand back as if shocked.
Li Hao was startled, not expecting such a reaction, and frowned. They were a couple now, so why did she resist even holding hands?
Lin Yuqing realized she’d overreacted, but it was instinctive. In her heart, Li Hao wasn’t even a friend, let alone a boyfriend.
“This is the office, we… need to be careful,” she said.
Li Hao recovered and suggested, “We haven’t had dinner together in ages. Let’s go watch a movie tonight.”
“If we don’t spend time together, I’m afraid we’ll drift apart.”
“I… alright,” Lin Yuqing agreed, since Li Hao had pressed the issue.
……
“Tang Meng, here’s the background information on Lin Yuqing,”
At Tang Meng’s apartment, her agent handed her a stack of documents.
She hurriedly took them, surprised as she read through Lin Yuqing’s profile, then sneered, “Didn’t expect that woman to have quite the background.”
“Vice President of Lin Group, a wealthy heiress, and her boyfriend is the heir to the Li family. No wonder she’s so capable, making everyone in the company revolve around her.”
“She even pretends to be pure online, but clearly she’s a scheming green tea. She must’ve used plenty of tricks behind the scenes to climb up.”
“From now on, get someone to draft a story—have people tail her. I refuse to believe I can’t bring her down.”
“How dare she act smug in front of me! Hmph!”
The agent smiled and nodded, knowing Tang Meng was truly angry and would follow orders.
At noon, while Zhao Sijie was having lunch at the company, Lili pulled her into a small group chat and immediately asked:
“Sijie, was that your boyfriend driving a sports car the other night? Didn’t expect he’d be so rich.”
“Yeah, Sijie, what does your boyfriend do? Is he a rich second-generation?”
Everyone was gossiping, making Zhao Sijie laugh and cry. She replied, “No, he’s just a driver. The car belongs to his boss.”
“What? He’s just a driver?!”
“I thought so, he didn’t look like a rich kid anyway.”
“Sijie, you’re a catch yourself. Why settle for a driver?”
They all looked shocked, pretending to care about her, thinking it was a pity for someone with her background to date a driver.
But inwardly, they were delighted. Last night, they’d felt awkward, jealous, and off-balance, thinking he was some low-key rich heir.
Turns out their instincts were right; he was no better than a nobody—a driver, with little future.
“As long as I like him, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care if he’s rich or not,” Zhao Sijie said nonchalantly, and the others quickly changed the subject, moving on to luxury brands—Chanel, Dior—seeming to show off intentionally.
Zhao Sijie didn’t take it to heart. Instead, she sent Xia Yu a message.
“I really want to see this movie. I wonder if Mr. Xia will accompany me?”
“Of course,” Xia Yu responded, readily agreeing. After all, it was only right to take his girlfriend to a movie.
Zhao Sijie smiled with happiness.
So, after work, Xia Yu drove over to pick her up. They had a simple meal, then went straight to the cinema.
“Brother Yu, your boss is so generous—he lets you drive his sports car every day?” Zhao Sijie couldn’t help but comment as they got out.
“Uh…” Xia Yu smiled awkwardly. “My boss is pretty nice, has several cars. He thinks I’m honest and a good driver, so he lets me drive them. He doesn’t really use them himself.”
“That’s great. You have to work hard, then.”
“Mm, let’s go in. The movie’s about to start.”
Just as the two entered, Li Hao and Lin Yuqing arrived shortly after.
They went in one after another, neither noticing they were in the same screening room, until…
