Chapter 120: Mistaken Identity
However, her resistance seemed futile.
Ling Yuan had already fulfilled his wish and kissed Yun Zui, though he did not deepen the embrace, merely brushing his lips against hers like a dragonfly skimming the water.
"I almost forgot, you haven't seen my face yet," Ling Yuan whispered softly.
He then lifted one of Yun Zui's hands and placed it upon his mask. Gazing at her with profound affection, he said, "Once you have seen it, I shall be yours."
The expression in Yun Zui's eyes was incredibly complex. Perhaps Ling Yuan had truly mistaken her for someone else!
Yun Zui hesitated to remove the mask. In truth, if she had simply moved her fingers, Ling Yuan would have taken it off himself, yet she remained perfectly still.
"Do you wish to speak?" He noticed the urgency constantly conveyed by her eyes.
Yun Zui nodded immediately.
She had been wanting to speak for a long time, but had been unable to utter a sound.
Without a word, Ling Yuan tapped a pressure point on her body, and Yun Zui felt her voice return.
"You..." Yun Zui’s first word emerged with a broken tone. After a small cough, she felt she could speak clearly and immediately said, "You have mistaken me for someone else!"
Ling Yuan was stunned, clearly unwilling to believe her words.
Seeing this, Yun Zui continued, "You really have mistaken me for someone else. I have no idea why your face hurts."
Ling Yuan’s complexion turned pale. Yun Zui's cold refusal and pretense of not knowing him filled him with fear.
"Perhaps you have forgotten, but I remember you," Ling Yuan declared at once.
He could not forget the events of fifteen years ago. He had been inexplicably swept away into a desert. There, he was surrounded by a pack of starving wolves. He was only ten years old; he could not fight them off and was bitten again and again. Each time the wolves licked his face with their raspy, thorn-like tongues, chunks of his flesh were torn away.
Just as he thought he would perish in the wolves' jaws, a young girl appeared. That girl was Su Rantong.
She arrived with a massive, snow-white wolf. Around the wolf's neck hung a chain of ivory, and its eyes glowed with a ghostly green light. With just a single upward howl, the pack of wolves surrounding him was terrified into fleeing.
Su Rantong knelt to staunch his bleeding, and in that moment, he had surrendered his heart to the girl who saved his life.
"Sleep now. When you wake, it won't hurt anymore," Su Rantong’s delicate, crisp voice had whispered in his ear.
Ling Yuan obeyed. When he drifted into sleep and finally awoke, he found himself lying at his own doorstep. The girl was gone, but the wounds on his body remained. He knew it was not a dream, yet it felt as if it were, for that desert did not exist.
It was a terrifying dream, yet one he longed to return to.
"Do you not remember? In the desert, you saved me with a wolf..." Ling Yuan’s eyes were filled with profound sorrow and urgency.
Yun Zui was startled. A desert?!
She and Chi Nie had once been to a desert, but she had later learned that the desert had ceased to exist hundreds of years ago. As for the wolf, she and Chi Nie had once been led out of a wilderness by a wolf.
Was there a connection between these events?
For a moment, Yun Zui felt a flood of chaotic thoughts.
"That desert vanished hundreds of years ago. Have you lost your mind?" Although Yun Zui knew the desert existed, it remained undiscovered by the world, and thus, people did not believe in its existence.
By saying this, Yun Zui could mirror the disbelief of others.
Her words chilled Ling Yuan to the core. Why would she not admit it?
Even though fifteen years had passed, Yun Zui was still so very much like the Su Rantong of fifteen years ago!
