In her modern life, she had been an orphan, raised by her grandfather. She knew all too well the bitterness of being parentless, which gave her a natural sympathy for children. However, she rarely expressed her emotions, except in the presence of her grandfather.

Yun Zui followed Xiao Tianming into the house. The interior was damp, reeking of a faint, musty odor, and the bed was nothing more than a pile of straw. Could people actually live in such a place? Even during her most grueling missions, when she had to sleep in a tree or crouch in the reeds, the conditions were far better than this. She would rather sleep out in the open than stay here.

The little girl, Xiangbao, was only six years old. She was currently suffering from a high fever, delirious and flushed with heat, her face covered in red papules. It looked very much like smallpox. She was covered by a tattered, worn-out coat; the sheer misery of their existence was heartbreaking.

"Doctor, how is my sister?" Xiao Qi’er asked, his voice filled with anxiety.

The physician had only taken one look before declaring, "The child has smallpox; it is a death sentence. You didn't bother to quarantine her, and then you bring me here? Are you trying to get me killed?" Having said this, he fled in a panic.

Yun Zui stared at the departing back of the physician, speechless. It was just smallpox, not some terrifying plague.

Xiao Tianming, Xiao Qi’er, and Gou’er had all turned deathly pale upon hearing the news. In Yun Zui’s understanding, although smallpox was one of the most infectious diseases in the world, it was by no means incurable in the modern era if treated properly. The physician’s cowardly reaction left her utterly exasperated. Seeing the group in the room suddenly plunged into despair, Yun Zui felt a stir of emotion.

"Hand Xiangbao over to me," Yun Zui said, taking the initiative.

The group looked up at her, stunned. A normal person’s reaction would have been to run away just as quickly as the doctor had. Seeing their bewildered expressions, Yun Zui added, "I have had smallpox myself, and I recovered." The implication was clear: she could save Xiangbao.

Their eyes lit up instantly. "Really?"

"Of course." Yun Zui felt a bit exasperated; the young man actually doubted her.

After exchanging glances, Xiao Tianming and the others knelt on the ground. Xiao Tianming spoke up, "Young master, if you can save Xiangbao, I am willing to be your servant for the rest of my life."

Yun Zui felt three black lines of frustration appear on her forehead. With his frail build, he wanted to be a beast of burden? He lacked the strength to be an ox, and she doubted he could run fast enough to be a horse. Still, she understood it was just a figure of speech.

"That won't be necessary," Yun Zui said, her expression indifferent. She turned to Xiao Tianming and added, "Pack your things. I will hire a carriage to take Xiangbao and all of you to a proper place to stay. This place is hardly suitable for recovery."

Xiao Tianming hesitated, seemingly afraid that Yun Zui might be using the pretext of treating Xiangbao to kidnap them.

"You are all moving there, and I will be the one driving the carriage. With so many of you, surely you could overpower me if something went wrong?" With that, Yun Zui turned and walked away.

Watching her leave, Xiao Tianming stood dazed for a moment. Could there really be such a kind person in this world? He believed her point about being able to overpower her, but he could never have known that Yun Zui was a mercenary—a legendary figure in the mercenary world whom they would have no chance of defeating.
