Chapter 119: Your Doomsday Has Been Delivered (2)
"Are you all by yourself?" Fang Sanqian looked up and asked.
The young girl smiled, her cheeks dimpling, looking both adorable and well-behaved. "Yes, I am."
"She's alone, and we still have..." Fang Sanqian tapped his waist. "Let's get to a safe place first. Staying here isn't secure."
"But we're out of ammo..." They had been chased by zombies earlier, and their ammunition was long gone.
Fang Sanqian replied, "She doesn't know that."
"..."
After a brief discussion, the group agreed to follow Fang Sanqian's decision. Having a safe place meant they could rest and replenish their strength.
...
Ling Qiong led them along the road, walking at a leisurely pace—a true stroll. She wasn't in a hurry, but the eight people behind her were anxious on her behalf, terrified that a zombie might leap out from some dark corner.
"No need to be so nervous; they usually don't come around here."
"Why?"
"I don't know, maybe they just don't like this area." Ling Qiong bit down on a lollipop and curled her lips into a smile. "They seem to prefer the street over there."
"..."
Fang Sanqian didn't know if Ling Qiong was making it up or telling the truth, so he cautiously kept his silence.
Along the way, they truly didn't encounter a single zombie. It was as smooth as a post-dinner stroll before the apocalypse.
Ling Qiong entered the shopping mall through the back door. The place had clearly been ransacked already. Clothes, plastic packaging, and opened tin cans were scattered everywhere.
"There's food in the warehouse downstairs." Ling Qiong generously pointed out the location. "There are clothes upstairs if you need to change. Don't worry, there shouldn't be any zombies in here."
"...Shouldn't be?"
Ling Qiong nodded. "Mhm, I haven't run into any."
"You haven't checked?"
Ling Qiong leaned against a glass counter, chewing on her lollipop, and mumbled, "The mall is so big, how could I check every corner by myself?"
"..."
Aren't you afraid?!
...
Fang Sanqian divided the group into four teams to inspect the mall and ensure all the doors were secure. There were indeed no living zombies, though they did find a few corpses wearing mall uniforms, likely dealt with by whoever had looted the place before them.
Fang Sanqian went to the warehouse for supplies and was shocked by the size and number of crates inside; he walked out feeling utterly dazed.
"Down there... there are so many supplies."
Hearing this, everyone rushed down to see. The warehouse looked as if it had just been restocked, with almost nothing depleted—it was completely packed.
For days, they had each been eating only tiny portions to conserve resources. Now, with such an abundance, everyone ate their fill.
Ling Qiong lay lazily on a sofa, playing with a mobile phone, showing no signs of vigilance. Her presence felt negligible; she was so quiet that when you weren't looking at her, it felt as if she had blended into the background. Yet, the moment you looked her way, you would find her striking, a focal point that commanded attention.
The sofa she lay on looked completely out of place with the surrounding decor. The area was wide open, and the sofa was placed right in the center. There was no cover; if anything appeared, it would be seen at a glance. Fang Sanqian surveyed the surroundings and noticed that the spot was very close to both the exits and the windows.
This girl...
"How does your phone have power?" The youngest boy in the group snuck over at some point and asked curiously.
Ling Qiong didn't even look up. "You can turn on any phone in the mall; they all have power."
The boy's eyes lit up, and he scurried off to grab a few phones. Sure enough, they all turned on. There was no signal or internet, so they couldn't make calls, but they could play the pre-installed single-player games. Even so, being able to play a game felt incredibly relaxing.
When the phone died, Ling Qiong threw it aside, sat up, and slowly stretched.
"Um... thank you for letting us stay," Fang Sanqian said, walking over to express his gratitude.
"You're welcome."
Fang Sanqian asked, "I haven't asked your name yet."
"Xu Wuyan." Ling Qiong opened a bottle of water and tilted her head. "Where are you all headed?"
"We don't know, just out of the city for now." Fang Sanqian sighed, his brows furrowed with worry. "With things the way they are, nowhere is safe."
In a world overrun by zombies, where could one be safe? They didn't even know how much longer they would live.
Ling Qiong nodded in agreement. "That's true."
"What about you?" Seeing that Ling Qiong wasn't difficult to talk to, Fang Sanqian pulled up a chair and sat opposite her. "Where do you plan to go?"
Ling Qiong shrugged. "Isn't it fine here? There's food and drink."
Fang Sanqian was slightly stunned and muttered, "But this place is crawling with zombies..." What was fine about it?
City B was a densely populated metropolis with over ten million residents. After the outbreak, ninety percent of the people hadn't managed to escape. One could only imagine how many zombies were here now. Staying here? Wasn't that just asking for death?
Ling Qiong smiled and said lightly, "Where aren't there zombies?"
Fang Sanqian: "..."
...
Fang Sanqian didn't dare lower his guard and arranged for a night watch, two people per shift. The two girls in the group didn't need to stand watch, so the remaining six could rotate through three shifts.
Fang Sanqian and another team member, Zhang Yang, were on the middle shift. When he stood up, he glanced toward the sofa. The young girl was lying there, her long, straight legs casually crossed and resting on the armrest. Her face was slightly turned, her breathing steady, and she appeared to be fast asleep.
"Brother Qian, do you think there's something wrong with her?" Zhang Yang poked Fang Sanqian and asked in a low voice.
Fang Sanqian shook his head. "I don't know."
This girl was quite strange. He had tried to chat with her earlier to gather some information. She seemed very cooperative in answering his questions, but in reality, she hadn't given a straight answer to anything. Other than knowing her name was Xu Wuyan, they knew absolutely nothing else.
"We'll find a way to leave tomorrow; let's not cause any unnecessary trouble," Fang Sanqian said.
"So we're just going to ignore her?"
"...We'll see."
Watching at night was boring and made one prone to drowsiness, so Fang Sanqian paced back and forth to keep himself awake.
"Brother Qian, I'm going to the restroom." Zhang Yang felt the urge to go and ran off toward the washroom after telling Fang Sanqian.
A minute later, Zhang Yang ran out of the restroom with a panicked expression.
Fang Sanqian hurried over. "What happened?"
Zhang Yang pointed toward the restroom. "Outside... there are so many zombies."
There was a window in the restroom, though it was quite high. When Zhang Yang went in, he heard movement outside, so he had climbed onto the windowsill to take a look. What he saw was a sea of zombies below. They were packed so densely that it made one's scalp crawl.
"Ah!"
Fang Sanqian and Zhang Yang exchanged a look and quickly ran out of the restroom. Everyone else in the group was now awake. Ling Qiong was sitting up on the sofa, rubbing her eyes.
"Who screamed?"
"What happened?"
"No... I didn't scream."
"Neither did I."
There were only two girls in the team, and that voice had clearly come from a woman. If it wasn't one of their own...
Everyone turned their gaze toward Ling Qiong.
Ling Qiong sniffed, looking completely innocent. "It wasn't me."
