Chapter Ninety-Four: Quite Remarkable
"Go to the Wei family?" Chen Shangyi said in a low voice. "Isn't that a bit dangerous..."
A true cultivator who had attained the Golden Core Path had already made a move, and even Chen Shangyi felt a chill of apprehension. Otherwise, when the crisis first arose, he would not have tried to unleash a forbidden art at once. Of course, he also knew that even if he did use such a technique, he would still have no chance of surviving against a true Golden Core cultivator.
And now Wang Changsheng not only had nearly killed a member of the Wei family, he was also going to march straight into their lair?
How was that any different from courting death?
Wang Changsheng only smiled and gave no explanation, after all Chen Shangyi had not heard the telepathic message and therefore did not know what had happened.
"Follow along. It's very exciting," Wang Changsheng said with a smile.
How could it not be exciting?
Going directly to the Wei family meant facing that true Golden Core cultivator head-on. With Wang Changsheng and the others' strength, they were still far too weak compared with a cultivator of that level, with not even the slightest power to resist.
It was no different from a sheep walking into a tiger's den, delivering itself to the slaughter.
Wang Changsheng turned around and looked at the Second Elder. "Let's go. Take us straight to the Wei family."
The Second Elder's expression shifted darkly and unpredictably as he looked at Wang Changsheng and the others. Then, as though receiving some order, he nodded at them. It was clear he had been given instructions by the true cultivator of the Wei family.
"Let's go."
The Second Elder said in a deep voice to Wang Changsheng and the others, then turned and left.
As for the remaining cultivators of the Wei family, the Second Elder paid them no mind. He was certain that even with the Ninth Elder and the others badly wounded, no one in Jinning City would dare lay a hand on them.
Only after Wang Changsheng and the others had followed the Second Elder away did the scene gradually settle back into calm. Only then did the many houses that had not been damaged open their protective arrays again. As for the houses that had already been destroyed, naturally the Wei family cultivators would handle the aftermath.
When Wang Changsheng and the others arrived at the Wei family estate, they immediately saw that it occupied a vast area and had been decorated in dazzling luxury, revealing the extraordinary standing of the Wei family.
As soon as they stepped inside, many Wei family cultivators surrounded them.
What had just happened in Jinning City was already known by every cultivator of the Wei family. However, a death order had been issued from above: no Wei family cultivator was permitted to come to the rescue. Otherwise, during the battle in Jinning City, Wang Changsheng and the others would likely have been swallowed whole by the sheer number of Wei family cultivators.
Every Wei family cultivator present looked at Wang Changsheng and the others with indignation. Especially when they saw the Second Elder covered in blood, they seemed to want nothing more than to devour Wang Changsheng and his people alive.
Wang Changsheng merely smiled and paid them no heed. He led the disciples of the Corpse Refining Sect through the tide of Wei family cultivators, his face carrying a faint smile.
In truth, Wang Changsheng was terrified as well. At such close range, if any of the Wei family disciples truly harbored ill intent, Chen Shangyi and the others might not have time to save them.
Chen Shangyi and the others, on the other hand, remained perfectly composed. Back in the Corpse Refining Sect, they often walked through crowds, and the disciples around them were usually at the Core Formation stage. The scale of that sort of formation was far beyond anything these Wei family cultivators could compare to.
Moreover, the majority of the Wei family cultivators here were only at the Meridian Opening and Essence Transformation stages. There were in fact very few Core Formation cultivators, and they posed no real threat to Chen Shangyi and the others.
"What are you all staring at? Don't you need to cultivate?"
The Second Elder said in a grim voice as he looked at the Wei family disciples. "What happened today is a lesson. If you do not work hard in your cultivation, then even if danger comes right to your doorstep, the Wei family may not be able to keep you safe!"
Hearing the Second Elder's anger, the Wei family cultivators had no choice but to disperse. As they left, they did not forget to cast fierce glances at Wang Changsheng and the others.
Only after the Wei family cultivators had dispersed did Wang Changsheng finally let out a breath of relief.
"The Wei family is certainly united," Wang Changsheng said to the Second Elder in a low voice.
"Hmph."
The Second Elder could only snort coldly to express his displeasure.
He led Wang Changsheng deeper into the Wei family estate, and after a short while they arrived before a small courtyard.
"Go in."
The Second Elder said in a deep voice.
Wang Changsheng nodded and pushed open the courtyard gate, walking inside.
"You are not allowed to enter!" The Second Elder raised a hand to block Chen Shangyi and the others, who were about to follow.
Chen Shangyi and the others immediately changed expression. Zhang Cunzhong was the most direct of all, summoning his coffin and placing it before him, clearly ready to strike at the slightest disagreement.
"It seems the disciples of the Corpse Refining Sect are not very well mannered," the Second Elder said mockingly as he looked at Wang Changsheng, a cold smile on his face.
"That depends on who they are facing," Wang Changsheng said with a smile. "Toward friends, they would not be so guarded."
As he spoke, Wang Changsheng looked at Chen Shangyi and the others and smiled. "No need to be alarmed. Just wait here for me."
With that, Wang Changsheng walked straight into the courtyard.
Since they were already at the Wei family headquarters, and things had developed to this point, the person waiting for him in the courtyard must hold an extraordinary position within the Wei family. Most likely it was the Wei family's Golden Core true cultivator.
If the Wei family truly intended to make a move now, whether Chen Shangyi and the others followed him or not would no longer matter much.
In any case, they had no power to resist.
As soon as Wang Changsheng stepped into the courtyard, he saw a stone table inside, with two people seated beside it, chatting.
Approaching slowly, he discovered that one of them was a middle-aged man, while the other was a young woman in her prime.
"Deacon Wang, come and sit."
The middle-aged man greeted him directly. From the sound of his voice, Wang Changsheng instantly confirmed that this was the Wei family expert who had sent him the telepathic message. He should be the Wei family's true Golden Core cultivator. As for who the young woman beside him was, Wang Changsheng had no idea.
He did not stand on ceremony. He sat down directly in the only remaining seat, smiling at the two of them.
The three of them said nothing for a moment, and the atmosphere grew somewhat strange.
Only then did Wang Changsheng notice that a cup of fragrant tea had already been placed on the stone table before him, though the tea had gone cold.
"It seems you left not long ago," Wang Changsheng said leisurely, looking at the two of them.
Pfft.
The young woman could not help laughing the moment she heard him speak.
"Senior Wei, I told you so. If you did not prepare carefully, this Deacon Wang would absolutely see through it," the young woman said with a smile.
The middle-aged man called Senior Wei smiled as well. With a gentle wave of his hand, the cooled tea before Wang Changsheng vanished, replaced by a steaming fresh cup.
Merely inhaling its fragrance made Wang Changsheng feel a wave of ease and comfort spread through his body, revealing that this tea was no ordinary thing.
"I am the Wei family's Grand Elder, Wei Tong," the middle-aged man said with a soft smile.
Wang Changsheng immediately cupped his fists in salute.
That name was no stranger to him. When he had previously gathered information at the tavern, he had spent ten mid-grade spirit stones to learn that the strongest expert in Jinning City, and also the strongest within the Wei family, was Wei Tong, suspected to be a true cultivator at the mid-Golden Core stage.
"Corpse Refining Sect, Wang Changsheng," Wang Changsheng said in a low voice as well.
"I have long heard of you. I did not expect Deacon Wang to be so young," Wei Tong said with a faint smile.
"You think I am young?" Wang Changsheng could not help laughing. "Grand Elder means my cultivation is lacking, doesn't he?"
"No need to be so polite. My cultivation is indeed not very high. As for being young, I would not say so..." Wang Changsheng said with a smile.
Among the three present, Wang Changsheng looked the oldest by far. The young woman need not be mentioned, and Wei Tong himself looked no older than thirty. As for Wang Changsheng, his temples were already streaked with white, making him appear to be well past fifty.
As for cultivation, Wang Changsheng could not see through either of them. Wei Tong was needless to say a true Golden Core cultivator, and the young woman gave off not the slightest trace of aura at all.
"My cultivation is not high; that much is true. And as for being young, that is also true. Judging by Deacon Wang's bones and frame, you are only around two hundred years old. In the cultivation world, isn't that still considered young?" Wei Tong said with a smile. "Young though you are, Deacon Wang is certainly capable."
"Bringing over a dozen Core Formation disciples of the Corpse Refining Sect and stirring up chaos throughout Jinning City, even throwing the Wei family into utter disorder," Wei Tong's expression slowly darkened. "I wonder how Deacon Wang intends to settle this matter?"
"Or has the Corpse Refining Sect already decided to take my Wei family as its target?"
A trace of pressure began to emanate from Wei Tong's body.
Under that force, Wang Changsheng felt as though he were carrying a mountain on his shoulders. Even breathing became somewhat difficult.
Fortunately, that pressure vanished in an instant. When Wang Changsheng recovered, he found that his clothes had already been soaked through with sweat.
His expression also turned somewhat sullen.
"What if I do want to take your Wei family as the target?" Wang Changsheng said in a low voice. "Could your Wei family really resist it?"
Wang Changsheng was also burning with irritation. Did these high-cultivation bastards all have something wrong with their heads? They kept using their pressure to suppress others at the slightest provocation. Did they think that was amusing?
As soon as he said this, Wei Tong and the young woman both froze, looking at Wang Changsheng in surprise.
"Hahaha..."
After a brief moment of stunned silence, Wei Tong suddenly burst into laughter.
"Interesting. Truly interesting!" Wei Tong laughed.
"Deacon Wang, I think it is a waste for someone like you to be merely a small deacon in the Corpse Refining Sect. How about coming to my Wei family instead?" Wei Tong said with a smile. "My Wei family may not be as powerful as the Corpse Refining Sect, but throughout the entire Shentian Realm, we are still among the foremost of the second-rate powers!"
"Just so happens that my Wei family is lacking a patriarch. I think Deacon Wang's abilities would be more than sufficient."
Having said that, Wei Tong looked at Wang Changsheng with a smile, as though waiting for his answer.
Wang Changsheng: "..."
Looking at Wei Tong's sly old fox smile, Wang Changsheng felt a chill run down his spine.
Patriarch of the Wei family?
What sort of joke was that?
He had no connection to the Wei family whatsoever. He had nearly had Chen Shangyi and the others kill the Wei family's cultivators just now, including two elders among them. Yet now Wei Tong was inviting him to become the Wei family's patriarch. Wang Changsheng seriously suspected that Wei Tong must have gone mad.
