Chapter 24 0025: You Solve This One!
Mo Yu had no idea that Chu Yun had come to the rival Lan Wind Academy; he had made a special trip to find him.
The two walked together down the corridor of the Lan Wind teaching building, and Mo Yu brought up the matter of Fan Zhiming.
“I heard Fan Zhiming is dead. They couldn’t find the body, but his vital signs disappeared two days ago. No one has seen him for forty-eight hours, and the whole Fan family is frantic. It’s almost certain he’s gone. That kind of person deserves it. A lot of students are secretly celebrating that this troublemaker is finally out of the picture. You getting expelled because of him could be considered his comeuppance.”
Chu Yun showed no interest in the subject, and turned to Mo Yu with a teasing smile. “You, the sworn enemy’s student, coming to our academy—aren’t you worried you’ll get mobbed?”
Mo Yu replied, “I don’t know if I’ll get beaten up, but you, the traitor who jumped ship, if you ever go back to the First Martial Academy, you’ll definitely be publicly denounced and surrounded. People here have always tried every means to get into the First Martial Academy, but no one’s ever come from there to here. The precedent you set has made many seniors very unhappy. Before, it was just dragging the academy’s average strength down, but now you’ve defected to the enemy. You’d better be careful, and keep a low profile at inter-academy martial events, or you’ll be targeted.”
Mo Yu glanced around at the surroundings, which were decent enough. After all, this was once the top academy—the proverbial skinny camel still bigger than a horse. He asked Chu Yun, “So, are you getting used to it?”
Chu Yun nodded. “It’s alright, same as always. I’m self-taught wherever I go. I just want a diploma for my mother. Her only wish in life is not to lose face for our ancestors. If I can get a graduation certificate from some martial academy, she’ll be satisfied.”
Mo Yu sighed. “That makes it easy for you. I’m under a lot of pressure now. If my strength doesn’t improve this year, I’ll have to repeat a year—that’s humiliating.”
Chu Yun patted him on the shoulder. “Cultivation is up to oneself, but if you run into any difficulties you can’t solve, let me know. Maybe I can offer a pointer.”
“Forget it,” Mo Yu rolled his eyes. “My dad plans to hire an outside tutor to help me prep for the assessment. I think I’ll be fine. Soon I’ll probably have to go into seclusion.”
Chu Yun nodded in understanding.
“Oh, right. I heard the beauty and genius Hou Manman from River City transferred to your academy. What’s going on?” Mo Yu asked curiously. “Is she here because of you?”
Chu Yun asked, “What did you hear?”
Mo Yu looked at Chu Yun with a mischievous grin. “They say you used to have Ye Linglong covering you, and now Hou Manman’s doing the same. Is your tuition really paid by her?”
Chu Yun gave a wry smile. “More or less. She went ahead and paid it without asking me. I’m just about to go find her and return the money.”
As they spoke, they arrived at a laboratory.
Inside, a white-bearded foreign elder was writing formulas of arcane mathematics magic on the blackboard.
Chu Yun slipped quietly inside and found Hou Manman seated at the highest step, engrossed in her notes.
Many students attended the arcane mathematics magic class just to listen and study; the course was rare, and whenever it was offered, students flocked to record it. Arcane mathematics magic was the knowledge left behind by the third-level civilization that once ruled this planet. The earliest captives were influenced by it, and after that civilization migrated away, the remaining native arcane magicians became highly sought after. Yet, without further advanced knowledge, the first batch of magicians gradually died out, and the profession entered a decline. The lack of successors made the magician profession unpopular, though it remained the aspiration of a select few.
Arcane mathematics magic was difficult; otherwise, there would not be so few magicians on Earth, nor would they be so fiercely protected.
To establish connections between this planet and other civilizations, arcane mathematics magic was essential for constructing portals—tasks managed each year by the Magic Guild. The Guild held a unique place across the continent; no faction or clan could arbitrarily harm those in the magician profession, underscoring their esteemed status.
Even the headstrong Hou Manman dared not show disrespect in the arcane mathematics magic class. Her note-taking was so diligent that she didn’t notice Chu Yun approaching.
Chu Yun placed a bank electronic chip on her desk. “Tuition is a hundred thousand a year, three years is three hundred thousand gold coins. There’s five hundred thousand here. The extra two hundred thousand is yours—go get your head checked.”
Hou Manman was stunned.
It was shocking that Chu Yun could be so brazen even in a magic class.
“Shh.” Hou Manman pressed her slender finger to her lips, signaling him to stay silent.
At that moment, the white-haired magic instructor, large floral glasses perched on his nose, glanced casually toward the source of the disturbance. His gaze lingered on Chu Yun and Hou Manman. Noticing the teacher’s reaction, Hou Manman whispered, “Let’s talk after class.”
“No need,” Chu Yun said, standing on the steps. “Please don’t bother me again.”
Just then, the magic teacher’s voice rang out: “Alright, I’ve just explained how to chant the latest natural law to activate magic. Now, I have a formula here—who wants to try solving it based on what I’ve taught?”
He finished, and immediately pointed at Chu Yun on the steps. “That young man, come down and solve it.”
Chu Yun had been about to leave, but now realized every eye in the classroom was fixed upon him.
Mo Yu, watching from the window outside, paled at the sight. This was a magic class, after all. Magicians weren’t under the school’s jurisdiction; they answered to the Magic Guild, which scouted for talent and imparted knowledge free of charge each year. Families and factions respected magic teachers, and few dared disrupt their classes.
Seeing Chu Yun hesitate, Hou Manman looked at him with sympathetic eyes. “The teacher wants you to go down.”
The teacher, holding a piece of chalk, spoke with emotion: “Back then, I regret not paying more attention in class and missing out on learning more magic formulas from my teacher. Now he’s gone, and when I finally want to study in earnest, there’s no one left to teach me. Come, you seem to have time to chat in class, so you must have mastered my lesson. Solve this problem.”
Hou Manman whispered behind Chu Yun, “Go down, apologize sincerely, and accept the penalty. The teacher never covered this question—you’ve disrupted his class!”
