"Brothers, give it to them with everything you've got!" the battalion commander shouted loudly.

With the enemy’s artillery neutralized, the soldiers’ situation improved significantly. The pressure upon them was suddenly relieved, and their counterattack against the Japanese forces grew fiercer by the moment.

Watching the enemy battalion struggle to retaliate under their heavy artillery fire, the commander couldn’t help but reflect, "I never imagined this—having artillery support feels absolutely exhilarating!"

In all his years of military service, he had never experienced such satisfaction. Previously, when subjected to the enemy’s artillery bombardment, they could only endure silently, utterly unable to respond. But now, with their own artillery, they could even suppress the enemy’s guns, turning the tide and forcing the previously dominant enemy to fall into disarray. The rapid shifts between attack and defense ignited a thrill within the commander unlike anything he had ever felt.

Indeed, it was damn exhilarating.

Spurred on by their commander’s rallying cry, the soldiers seized this golden opportunity to strike the retreating enemy relentlessly. Bullets poured toward the Japanese as if they were free.

The enemy, already struggling under the artillery assault, now faced the soldiers’ desperate counteroffensive. The pressure on them mounted tremendously.

Casualties mounted by the minute. At this pace, it wouldn’t be long before the battalion was thoroughly shattered.

Ichirō Kono watched anxiously, his heart heavy. Yet there was little he could do. Their Ninth Division’s mountain artillery regiment had been wiped out, and without artillery support, his battalion—already halved in strength—stood no chance against the Chinese firepower.

They were so suppressed they couldn’t even raise their heads, trapped in an impossible position, unable to advance or retreat.

Indeed, once the mountain artillery regiment was destroyed, Ichirō Kono’s battalion found itself in a dire predicament.

Amid the defenders’ fierce counterattack and overwhelming firepower, any enemy soldier who dared to show himself was instantly mowed down. Under such circumstances, not only was advancing impossible, even retreat was out of the question.

“Battalion Commander, we’re about to break! The Chinese firepower is too strong, our losses are mounting rapidly!” A soldier beside Ichirō Kono shouted anxiously.

“Baka! Do you think I don’t know that? But what else can I do?” Ichirō Kono snapped inwardly, tempted to slap the soldier for stating the obvious. Yet, at the critical moment, he restrained himself.

As battalion commander, the more critical the situation, the more he had to maintain composure. If he faltered, his entire battalion would collapse immediately.

He knew every eye was on him.

Forcing himself to calm down, Ichirō Kono took a deep breath and urgently ordered, “Quick, contact the brigade commander via field telephone and request reinforcements!”

“Yes, sir!” A soldier crouched behind him responded promptly, grabbing the phone and hastily calling the brigade commander. With the receiver to his lips, he anxiously reported, “This is the Seventh Battalion. We are under heavy fire from the Chinese during the attack and face fierce artillery bombardment. We’re barely holding on! Requesting immediate reinforcements, or else the entire Seventh Battalion risks annihilation!”

...

“Baka!”

At the Sixth Brigade headquarters, upon receiving the Seventh Battalion’s message, Brigade Commander Yoshimasa Akiyama slammed the receiver down in fury, his face ashen.

“Idiots! A bunch of idiots!” Akiyama roared, overturning everything on his desk. “Ichirō Kono is damned! After wasting so much time with no progress, he not only failed to advance but allowed the mountain artillery regiment to be utterly destroyed. He deserves to die!”

The massive explosion was visible even from miles away—Akiyama had seen it clearly. His entire body trembled at the sight. The mountain artillery regiment, meant to support his battalion’s assault, had been wiped out by the Chinese guns. Such a loss was unbearable even for him, the brigade commander.

Akiyama already foresaw the consequences: once the division commander held him accountable, there would be no mercy.

To appease the division commander’s wrath, Akiyama pinned his hopes on the assault troops’ success in capturing the Chinese positions. Yet, with Ichirō Kono’s plea for reinforcements, all hope was dashed.

How could Akiyama not be furious?

“Damn it all!” he shouted, breathing heavily, his fury filling the command post.

The surrounding officers kept their distance, wary of provoking the brigade commander’s wrath, lest they become the target of his temper.

After all, if the brigade commander turned on them, there would be nowhere to cry.

At that moment, an officer approached cautiously. “Brigade Commander, the division commander is calling!”

“Bring it here!” Akiyama grunted, his face darkening.

The officer hurriedly handed him the receiver.

Akiyama took the phone, drew a deep breath to steady his nerves, and answered, “Moshi moshi, this is Yoshimasa Akiyama.”

“Yoshimasa Akiyama, what’s going on? How did our Ninth Division’s mountain artillery regiment get destroyed by the Chinese? What is the status of your advance? Have you secured the Chinese positions?” The voice of Division Commander Yoshisuke Kikkawa demanded.

“Division Commander, I did not expect the Chinese to possess such a large artillery force. The annihilation of our mountain artillery regiment is my fault,” Akiyama replied. “Though we have yet to capture the Chinese positions, we have made some progress. Please grant me more time; I promise we will take them.”

“Hmph! If the Sixth Brigade cannot perform, then relieve it and send in capable troops!” Kikkawa said sharply. “You don’t have much time left. Handle it as you see fit.”

“Also, a word of advice: due to your failures, our Ninth Division’s mountain artillery regiment was wiped out. If you cannot capture the Chinese positions andI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
