Chapter Thirty-Three: The Wild Beating of the Little Fatty
Learning from his previous painful experience, this time Yang Jiekai decided to be “humble.” Instead of heading to a high-tier job fair like before, he chose one with lower requirements for various positions. The place was equally crowded, but the atmosphere was dramatically different. Yesterday, the job seekers were all dressed in sharp suits; here, the styles were all over the place—people in tank tops, some lugging bedding rolls—it felt more like a labor market.
After wandering through the noisy, sweat-drenched hall, Yang Jiekai finally found a company that seemed decent enough. At least the people in line there looked more conventional, and one of the positions on offer was security guard.
Straightening his clothes, Yang Jiekai strode confidently over, cleared his throat, and solemnly asked the recruiter, who was engrossed in her writing, “Excuse me, are you looking for high-end, outstanding talent?”
“Go to the back of the line!” The interviewer, a woman wearing thick-framed glasses, had short permed hair that looked outdated and messy. She was dark-skinned and thin, the type Yang Jiekai’s sharp eye immediately pegged as a “crooked-neck tree” body shape. Her face was caked in foundation, lips painted as if she’d drunk blood. After sizing her up, Yang Jiekai awarded her a consolatory score of twenty in his mind.
He opened his mouth, but facing such a fortress-like woman, his eloquence failed him. So, he obediently went to the end of the queue to wait.
“Hey, brother, you want to infiltrate the enemy’s ranks too?” The man in front, a short fellow with a buzz cut, turned and gave Yang Jiekai a strange grin.
“Infiltrate the enemy’s ranks?” Yang Jiekai asked, confused. “I’m here for a job interview.”
“Come on, we all know the deal. Don’t pretend!” The short man gave Yang Jiekai a knowing look and grinned slyly. “So, how many years have you been ‘at it’?”
“At it?” Yang Jiekai was unfamiliar with the term.
The short man sized him up again, astonished, as if seeing an alien. “You’re really here looking for a job?”
“Of course! Why else would I be here?” Yang Jiekai replied impatiently. “What does ‘at it’ mean?”
The short man chuckled, “Didn’t expect someone as innocent as you to still exist. Let me enlighten you. ‘At it’ just means how long you’ve been, well, pleasuring yourself. You know, using your own hand and a certain body part... It’s a normal piston-like activity, though some people substitute pork or other meats for their hands…”
After the short man’s professional “instruction,” Yang Jiekai finally understood, his expression a mix of amusement and exasperation. “Alright, I get it…”
Yang Jiekai quickly cut him off, worried that others might lump him in with this weirdo, and asked, “But what’s that got to do with job interviews? And what did you mean by infiltrating the enemy?”
The short man grinned, “Shows how shallow you are…”
Yang Jiekai interrupted, “Is that even the right way to use ‘shallow’?”
The short man looked annoyed. “Stop interrupting! Where was I? Oh, right, shallow. Do you know what this company does? It specializes in women’s products—sanitary pads, bras, cosmetics, that sort of thing. Most of the employees are women. In our circle, we call such companies ‘the kingdom of daughters.’ If you get hired, it’s like infiltrating enemy territory. You’ll be able to gather ‘intel’ every day. Ha! And by ‘intel,’ I don’t mean information, but, you know, arousal.”
“But isn’t that the same word?” Yang Jiekai, though usually quick-witted, found himself outmatched by this “expert” of the self-pleasure world.
“The meaning is different!” The short man waved dismissively. “Anyway, it’s my turn now. Wish me luck!”
“Different meaning?” Yang Jiekai smiled wryly. “He knows about differing meanings, huh…”
The “expert” lasted less than a minute before the “crooked-neck tree” rejected him without even looking up. Sighing, he went off in search of another “kingdom of daughters.”
Maybe it was the psychological shadow left by yesterday, but when his turn came, Yang Jiekai felt a bit nervous. Just as he took a deep breath to step forward, a tall, heavyset man—at least six foot one and over two hundred and fifty pounds—suddenly barged in.
“Cutting in!” The big man, pale and clean-faced, wore a thick silver chain around his neck that swung as he moved. Without even glancing at Yang Jiekai, he stepped right in front of him. The people behind almost said something, but seeing his size and demeanor, they chose silence.
Queue jumpers weren’t uncommon at job fairs, but their outcomes depended on their appearance and strength. If a scrawny guy tried it, he’d face righteous condemnation, maybe even a beating. But someone as formidable as this big man could jump the line at will, his bulk and tattoos letting him go unchallenged.
“Hey, friend.” Yang Jiekai reached out and lightly tapped the big man’s back. He was a full head shorter and far less imposing—in front of this man, Yang Jiekai was like a sapling beside a mountain.
“What do you want?” The big man turned and glared at Yang Jiekai.
“Could you please go to the back of the line?” Yang Jiekai smiled politely, careful to maintain his image—it was, after all, a serious occasion.
His words made those behind him silently sweat. Was this guy crazy? Most people would avoid confrontation, but he was heading straight into trouble.
The big man snorted, looked down at Yang Jiekai with amusement. “Did I hear you right? Say it again—I didn’t catch it.”
“I said…” As Yang Jiekai prepared to repeat himself politely, he felt someone tugging gently at his sleeve. Turning, he saw someone beside him, head lowered, quietly urging, “Brother, let it go. Don’t say it…”
Yang Jiekai smiled, patted the man’s shoulder, and turned back to the big man, repeating, “I said, could you please go to the back of the line?”
“Ah…” The guy behind Yang Jiekai sighed regretfully. Why couldn’t this fellow just take a hint?
The big man was taken aback, then suddenly burst out laughing, his tone turning vicious. “Here’s your last chance—repeat what you just said!”
Yang Jiekai remained smiling. “Oh, so you’ve got bad hearing? No problem, I’ll make it clearer for you.”
“You little—” The big man, enraged at being called hard of hearing, swung his thick arm, about to strike, when suddenly he felt a numbness in his ribs and a weakness in his knees, and his massive body collapsed uncontrollably.
Yang Jiekai moved like lightning, grabbing the man’s neck, pressing his knee against his back, pulling his ear close, and shouting loudly, “I said, you’re a fat, stupid pig!”
His shout was so powerful that everyone nearby covered their ears.
The big man lay on the ground, clutching his ears and wailing, as Yang Jiekai delivered a fierce beating. Though his movements looked intense, Yang Jiekai controlled his strength—enough to give the man a hard time, but not cause any real harm.
Blood streaming from his nose and mouth, the big man howled until Yang Jiekai finally relented. With one hand, Yang Jiekai easily lifted the hefty man and, smiling beside his ear, asked, “Now, did you hear me clearly? Or do you need me to repeat it?”
“I heard, I heard!” The big man nodded frantically, terrified of another ear-splitting shout.
“So what did I say?” Yang Jiekai asked calmly.
“Brother, you asked me to go to the back of the line…”
“Nope,” Yang Jiekai interrupted.
The big man, panicked, quickly corrected himself. “You said, I’m a fat, stupid pig and I should go to the back of the line!”
Yang Jiekai smiled with satisfaction. “So, was I right?”
“Brother, you were absolutely right. I’ll go to the back right now.” Seeing Yang Jiekai silent, the big man scrambled away.
The crowd, stunned into silence, watched as Yang Jiekai shrugged indifferently. “Not my fault—he’s the one with bad ears.”
With that, he turned toward the desk and smiled at the “crooked-neck tree,” who was equally shocked. “Hello, my name is Yang Jiekai. I’m here to apply for the security guard position.”
“Security guard?” The woman was momentarily stunned, then composed herself, straightened her collar, and stood to shake his hand. “Mr. Lin, welcome to Silkbud Trading Group!”
Yang Jiekai was surprised. “So… I’m hired just like that? No interview?”
She smiled lightly. “No need, you’ve already been interviewed. You’re exactly the kind of talent our company needs. From what just happened, I can see two things: first, you’re someone who follows rules and possesses a strong sense of justice; second, you can fight.”
Yang Jiekai rolled his eyes inwardly. The fighting part was true; as for noble character…
Nevertheless, he shook her hand politely. “Thank you.”
“Tomorrow morning at nine, report to the company’s HR department. We’ll assign you your position then.” She smiled at him.
Yang Jiekai smiled back, mentally adding thirty points to her score—not because she hired him, but because throughout their interaction, she was calm and natural, never showing insecurity or an inexplicable confidence about her appearance. Her genuine, unpretentious demeanor made Yang Jiekai feel comfortable. She didn’t seem so unattractive after all.
Leaving through the door, Yang Jiekai felt great, a long-lost sense of genuine happiness washing over him. It was just an ordinary job, nothing special, but he hadn’t felt this simple, solid joy in a very long time.
