Chapter 100: Chen Meng's Network of Connections (Please Subscribe)
At this moment, Chen Meng stepped over to the railing and looked downwards. All he saw was a rope swinging in the air, and at the other end of the rope was Ni Hu.
Wanting to die isn’t that easy.
For Chen Meng’s safety, Han Hao had already assigned extra personnel within Chen Meng’s usual activity area, and Jiang Feiyu was one of them.
Just now, Chen Meng had noticed Jiang Feiyu downstairs, ready to rescue at any moment. That was why he dared to provoke Ni Hu into jumping.
In Chen Meng’s view, Ni Hu’s previous state was one of utter despair, as if he was ready to die. Under such circumstances, it was better to let him face death once; perhaps then he might come to terms with things. This was a classic case of being forced to fight for survival by being pushed to the brink.
“Relax, you won’t die. Look how scared you all are—haven’t seen much of the world, have you?” Chen Meng said to the disciplinary director and homeroom teacher behind him. “Alright, stop standing there dazed. Get the students still outside the classroom back inside. Those who need to continue lessons, continue lessons; those due for exams, continue exams; those scheduled for physicals, continue with the physicals.”
“Oh, yes,” the disciplinary director replied mechanically, suddenly wondering who really was in charge here. “Uh, is he alright?”
“What could possibly be wrong?” Chen Meng said as he quickly headed downstairs, already seeing Jiang Feiyu signaling for him to come over.
...
Downstairs, Chen Meng saw Ni Hu, still somewhat dazed.
“How does it feel to have died once?” Chen Meng smiled faintly as he looked at Ni Hu.
“Why didn’t you let me die? Why did you save me?” Ni Hu said through gritted teeth, glaring at Chen Meng.
Chen Meng ignored him and glanced at Jiang Feiyu. “Brother Jiang, take him to the law enforcement bureau first. With his current state, if he goes home now, he might attempt suicide again.”
Jiang Feiyu nodded and grabbed Ni Hu, effortlessly shoving him into a law enforcement vehicle.
Nearby, many students watched Chen Meng casually chatting with the law enforcement officers, clearly shocked.
At this moment, Ma Yiqun even stepped forward, surprised. “Chen Meng, since when did you start knowing people in the law enforcement bureau?”
Chen Meng hadn’t seen Ma Yiqun for quite some time, and now that he did, he felt a strange sense of warmth.
He patted Ma Yiqun on the shoulder with a smile. “What’s so strange about that? I’m also a law enforcement officer now. If you get into trouble later, watch out—I might be the one arresting you.”
Hearing this, Ma Yiqun quickly ducked his head.
“Have you completed your physical?” Chen Meng changed the subject and asked.
He looked over to see the disciplinary director already herding students back into the classrooms, but seeing Chen Meng and Ma Yiqun here, no one dared to intervene.
“I’ve done it, no issues,” Ma Yiqun said, then added awkwardly, “But I’m probably not going to get into Jiangzhou University. My last mock exam score was still ten points below the lowest cutoff from previous years. If I really can’t get in, I’ll have to go to one of the other second-tier universities. Besides Jiangzhou University, Jiang City has two other second-tier colleges; other provinces have even more, but they’re farther from home.”
Chen Meng pondered for a moment. “Do your best. The college entrance exam is still three weeks away, so push harder. When the exam results come out, contact me. I’ll find out the admission situation at Jiangzhou University for you and see what the likely cutoff scores will be.”
“You have connections for that too?” Mo Xiaoyi looked at Chen Meng in surprise.
“Yeah, some connections. I know a few students and teachers there,” Chen Meng said thoughtfully. “Alright, you should get inside quickly. I’ll go handle the exemption paperwork for the physical exam, and then I have to visit the law enforcement bureau. After all, we’re classmates, and since something happened to Ni Hu, I need to check in on him.”
“Chen Meng, you’re a good person,” Mo Xiaoyi said after a moment’s thought.
“I hate when people call me a good person because... good people aren’t rewarded,” Chen Meng spat. He realized he might be meddling too much.
...
The homeroom teacher was already waiting for Chen Meng and approached him as he came over. “About Ni Hu’s situation...”
Chen Meng looked at the teacher, hesitating briefly. “I’ll handle it.”
The teacher nodded. “Good. Now you’re more capable than the teachers. If the school ever needs help, don’t be surprised if they come to bother you.”
Chen Meng smiled. After the college entrance exam, he planned to go to Jiangdu University, which was quite far from Jiang City. By then, he probably wouldn’t return often.
If they wanted to trouble him, it would be difficult enough just to see him.
The physical examination for their school was conducted by doctors from Jiang City First People’s Hospital. In addition to the doctors, some students from Jiangzhou Medical University assisted.
Chen Meng spotted a young doctor in charge of the physicals and chatted casually with him. Chen Meng was surprised to learn that he was in the same graduating class as Liu Xue.
“Do you know Liu Xue?” Chen Meng asked quietly.
The young man was momentarily stunned, looking at Chen Meng in surprise. “You know Liu Xue?”
Chen Meng nodded. “She’s an officer in the law enforcement bureau. Due to health reasons, she no longer participates in field missions and now handles clerical work. I chatted with her at the bureau and learned she was from this graduating class, so I asked casually.”
The man was silent for a moment, then slowly said, “She was in my major. I heard she joined the bureau right after college, but then there was no further news about her. Thanks for telling me this. Back in school, Liu Xue was the goddess of our class. Thinking back on those youthful days, it’s hard not to feel a bit nostalgic.”
Chen Meng said nothing more; some things were no longer appropriate to discuss.
Because of this connection, the doctor only asked a few casual questions before allowing Chen Meng to sign off on the exemption from the physical.
As Chen Meng left, the homeroom teacher looked at him with growing admiration.
Wherever Chen Meng went, he seemed to have connections, even with the doctors responsible for the physical exams. The teacher saw this as a kind of ability—a formidable ability.
...
At the law enforcement bureau, Chen Meng saw Jiang Feiyu waiting at the entrance.
“Brother Jiang, how’s my classmate doing now?” Chen Meng said, tossing a cold drink to Jiang Feiyu, who didn’t hesitate to catch it and take a big gulp.
“He’s fine, just won’t say a word. I even brought in a counselor, but it didn’t help,” Jiang Feiyu said. “I checked his background—it’s pretty pitiful. His father’s a gambler who owed a lot of money and ended up selling the family house to pay debts. His mother either couldn’t stand it or just gave up and cheated on his father. They’re currently divorcing. Living in such a household, the only thing he could be proud of was his grades—until you snatched first place in the class. Now, he’s failed the physical exam too. You can imagine the pressure he’s under; it’s no surprise he tried to kill himself.”
“So miserable—what a protagonist’s template,” Chen Meng murmured.
Jiang Feiyu was dumbfounded, half wondering if he’d misheard. At that moment, Chen Meng pushed open the door and walked inside.
