After hearing Fang Siqi’s words, the colleague beside her gave Jiang Yun a strange look before asking tentatively, “Are you Jiang Yun?”

Jiang Yun: ...

What do you mean, you recognize me?

Huh? I’m asking what you mean!

“Yes, that’s me.”

Although he was reluctant to admit it, Jiang Yun still nodded.

The male police officer’s eyes lit up. “So you’re the guy who earned our station a collective second-class merit award!”

Jiang Yun: ...

Just shut up. I don’t want to hear this.

Jiang Yun knew exactly what he was referring to.

It was the large-scale case involving the trafficking of women and forced prostitution that had come to light after his Audi had been rammed by that Weima.

Given the scope of the case, a collective second-class merit award was indeed well deserved.

The male police officer then turned to the noodle-shop owner. “We’ll have to inspect your shop. Please cooperate with us. If everything checks out, consider it free publicity for your business. There aren’t many shops that get the police called because their food is too delicious.”

The noodle-shop owner did not seem opposed. He smiled and said, “Of course I’ll cooperate. Shall I make a bowl of noodles now?”

The male police officer nodded. “Go ahead. We’ll package it up and take it back for testing.”

“All right.”

The owner began preparing to make another bowl.

But Jiang Yun said, “There’s no need to go to all that trouble. I haven’t eaten the bowl I ordered. You can just take that one back and test it.”

As he spoke, Jiang Yun quickly carried his bowl of noodles over to them.

The moment he saw the noodles in Jiang Yun’s hands, the noodle-shop owner’s cheerful expression changed.

Several beads of cold sweat even appeared on his forehead.

Forcing a smile, he said to Jiang Yun, “Young man, those are your noodles. You should eat them yourself. I’ll make another bowl for the officers.”

Although the owner tried his best to conceal his emotions, Fang Siqi and her colleague still noticed that something was wrong.

As police officers, they were particularly sensitive to subtle changes in people’s expressions and behavior.

Fang Siqi took the noodles from Jiang Yun and said to the owner, “It’s fine. He and I know each other, so we’ll use his bowl. That way, you won’t have to trouble yourself by making another.”

“It’s no trouble at all. The real trouble would be keeping a customer from enjoying his meal. Officer, just return the bowl to this young man.”

As he spoke, the noodle-shop owner reached out, apparently trying to snatch the bowl from Fang Siqi.

That action made Fang Siqi and her colleague even more certain that something was wrong with him.

Fang Siqi stepped back and avoided his grasp, then fixed him with a sharp gaze.

Her colleague immediately barked at the owner, “What are you doing?! Stand still!”

Once the police determined that someone was a criminal suspect, they generally showed him little courtesy. They knew that even the slightest negligence could lead to irreversible consequences.

The male officer’s shout left everyone in the noodle shop stunned.

All the customers stared at him in bewilderment.

The man who had spoken first was especially excited. “I told you there was something wrong with him! You believe me now, Officer, right?”

The male officer said nothing. He simply kept his eyes fixed on the noodle-shop owner.

Under that piercing gaze, the owner grew flustered and instinctively glanced toward the back of the shop.

The officer immediately demanded, “Why are you looking back there? What’s in there?!”

“N-Nothing... nothing...”

The owner’s answer sounded even more guilty, and even the other customers could tell that something was off.

“Siqi, go take a look,” the male officer ordered.

Fang Siqi handed the bowl of noodles to Jiang Yun and walked toward the area the owner had been looking at.

The owner seemed about to say something, but before he could open his mouth, the male officer shouted again, “Stand still! Don’t move!”

One of the customers felt the officer was being overly harsh and spoke up. “Officer, there’s no need to be so aggressive, is there? Maybe this is all just a misunderstanding.”

The male officer glanced at him but said nothing.

The owner’s actions had practically proven that there was something wrong with his noodles. The officer’s most important task now was to keep him under control until Fang Siqi returned with the results of her inspection.

When a crime might be involved, it was better to be accused of being overly severe than to give the suspect any chance to escape. No one could know what a criminal might do after getting away.

Fortunately, Fang Siqi soon emerged from the back of the shop.

In her hand, she held several plants.

When the male officer saw them, his gaze toward the noodle-shop owner grew even more severe.

Fang Siqi waved the plants and said, “Poppies. These noodles may contain poppy shells.”

The customers who had been eating immediately turned pale.

“Officer, I won’t become addicted to drugs, will I?”

“Officer, I’ve been eating here for more than a year. Won’t this damage my health?”

“Officer...”

The customers bombarded Fang Siqi with questions, making her frown slightly.

“If anyone is worried that something may be wrong with their health, you can go to the hospital for an examination. I’m taking the owner back to the station for further investigation now.”

With that, Fang Siqi walked over to the noodle-shop owner, still holding the poppies. “Whatever you have to say, you can say it at the station.”

Looking at the poppies in her hand, the owner’s heart sank into despair. He opened his mouth, but in the end, all he could do was sigh and follow Fang Siqi out.

Before leaving, Fang Siqi also took the bowl of noodles from Jiang Yun.

Finding poppies was one thing. More importantly, they had to prove that the owner had deliberately added poppy shells to the noodles.

Watching the noodle-shop owner leave with Fang Siqi, his face ashen, Jiang Yun could not help curling his lip.

“Tsk. Ignorance really is frightening.”

A diner who had been about to leave heard him and looked at him curiously.

“Brother, what did you mean by that?”

Jiang Yun spread his hands. “I was saying the noodle-shop owner was ignorant. He actually thought poppy shells could improve his business. The only reason he used them was because of two old rumors about poppy shells. First, that they enhance flavor and aroma. Second, that they are addictive. If they make the food taste better, diners will naturally come back.

“But neither claim is accurate. A professor at an institute specializing in drug dependence once reached a conclusion through experiments: poppy shells themselves have no flavor, so how could they enhance the taste? Some poppy shells even have a sour, astringent bitterness.”

Aside from failing to enhance flavor and aroma, poppy shells could not truly make people addicted either.

The belief that poppy shells were addictive mainly came from the morphine they contained. But many people did not realize that the morphine content in poppy shells was extremely low, only around 0.05 to 0.5 percent. Opium, by comparison, contains 10 to 15 percent morphine. The difference between them is as much as two hundredfold.

“This stuff can neither enhance the flavor nor make people addicted. Other than harming people’s health while also breaking the law, I honestly can’t think of any use for it.”

After hearing Jiang Yun’s explanation, the diner instinctively objected, “Then why are his noodles so delicious?”

“Because he’s simply good at cooking. He lacks confidence in his own skills and insists on taking shortcuts. Who could stop him?”

The diner: ..........

So I ate all those bowls for nothing?
