Chapter 35: Vice President Meng's Secretary
Feifei said with great certainty, "The history of the second young master of the Meng family never showing romantic interest in his secretaries is about to come to an end. Who knows? Someone walking out of our office might just become the next mistress of the Meng household." Having said this, she smoothed her hair, looking confident and flamboyant.
The others asked, confused, "Why do you say that?"
"Because the second young master doesn't want his secretary to have a boyfriend. Otherwise, why would he call Wan Si in for a reprimand?" Feifei glanced toward the second young master's office, imagining her most disliked colleague packing her things in disgrace.
"No way! Even though the second young master likes beautiful women, there is an unwritten rule at Dingsheng Group that he doesn't get involved with his secretaries. He doesn't seem like the type to waver on matters of principle."
The other four secretaries in the office whispered among themselves, listening to Feifei’s vague assertions and speculating about what would happen to Wan Si when she came out.
After a long while, they finally saw Wan Si emerge from the office. They tried to read her expression to see if this trip had been a blessing or a curse, but she remained uncooperatively composed. Under the watchful eyes of the other secretaries, Wan Si returned to her desk to pack her work folders.
Seeing this, Feifei was overjoyed—the woman she detested most was finally packing up to leave! "You love to show off, don't you? You insist on doing one hundred and twenty percent of the work when one hundred percent is enough. How are those of us who just aim for a passing grade supposed to survive?"
"Oh, is Secretary Wan really packing up to leave? Sisters, shouldn't we hold a simple farewell ceremony?"
Wan Si glanced at the gloating Feifei but said nothing, continuing to organize her documents.
Someone rushed to her side in alarm and asked, "Secretary Wan, what’s going on? Is it true that Mr. Meng is firing you because you have a boyfriend?"
Wan Si smiled at the person who spoke to her but still remained silent. She finally understood why Liu Feifei had been summoned by Meng Zexiao earlier.
Feifei was now even more convinced that Wan Si was being dismissed. Unable to contain her joy, she added, "Do you understand now? No matter how hard you work, it’s not as good as being pretty."
After finishing her packing, Wan Si carried her documents to Feifei’s desk and slammed them down with a heavy *thud*. "This is Mr. Meng's work for next week. You need to prepare a detailed itinerary based on his schedule. This is the material for the ribbon-cutting ceremony he is attending; you need to write a speech for him based on the requirements. These are the clients he intends to negotiate with soon; you need to find their detailed profiles so he knows how to approach them. Also, these are investment projects he is interested in; you need to draft a feasibility report. Per Mr. Meng's arrangements, all the work in my hands is now handed over to you. I hope Secretary Liu Feifei can handle these tasks well!"
While Liu Feifei was happy about Wan Si's departure, the documents in front of her were far beyond her capabilities. She was only skilled at making coffee for Meng Zexiao, delivering files, and accompanying him to social events to drink and chat with clients. Liu Feifei had enough self-awareness to know she couldn't handle any of the tasks Wan Si had dumped on her.
Liu Feifei lifted her chin and said, "Even if you aren't fired, you don't get to decide who handles your work!"
Wan Si smiled lightly. "Secretary Liu, you really should have listened carefully just now. Although I haven't been with Mr. Meng for long, I have learned one of his virtues: he never says things twice. I will repeat the last sentence: Per Mr. Meng's arrangements, all the work in my hands is now handed over to you. I hope Secretary Liu Feifei can handle these tasks well! Did you hear clearly? It was Mr. Meng's arrangement."
In reality, Meng Zexiao had only told Wan Si to organize her workload; he hadn't specified who she should hand it to. However, Wan Si understood that a barking dog doesn't bite. No matter how much Liu Feifei blustered, she wouldn't have the courage to go and verify Wan Si’s claim with Meng Zexiao.
Liu Feifei’s face turned bright red. Wan Si ignored her, sat down at her desk, and began drinking coffee and browsing the internet, looking completely at ease. It appeared that Wan Si wasn't being fired as Feifei had claimed; on the contrary, her workload had been significantly reduced. In fact, she was effectively doing nothing while collecting a high salary.
The others, unsure of what had transpired, quietly returned to their own work.
Wan Si ignored Liu Feifei’s glare and began using the information provided by Meng Zexiao to learn about his wife. From public records, Wan Si only knew that Kong Lingxin was the eldest daughter of Kong Changdong, the chairman of Changyue Real Estate. She was a graduate of B University’s Chinese department. After suffering a miscarriage a month ago, her personality had shifted so drastically that even the usually cold-hearted Meng Zexiao wanted to get to know her all over again and start from the beginning, as if they were just dating.
Meng Zexiao had said that as long as it helped his relationship with Kong Lingxin, Wan Si could do anything. Now, she wanted to make contact with this wealthy socialite she had never met to understand her temperament and preferences.
After finishing her coffee and closing her computer, Wan Si left the Dingsheng Building and headed for Meng Zexiao’s seaside villa.
This trip was official business, and she was driven by a driver from the Dingsheng Group’s motor pool. Along the way, Wan Si pondered how to approach the young mistress without causing her offense. As the villa drew near, she still hadn't come up with a strategy, and she began to regret taking on this task—it was much more troublesome than dealing with a pile of documents.
The security guard at the Meng residence saw the Dingsheng Group car and let them through after a brief inquiry.
Auntie Qi poured Wan Si a glass of water and went to inform the young mistress that someone was there to see her. After hearing the situation, Kong Lingxin felt a bit uneasy. She didn't know the purpose of the secretary's visit, but turning her away was not Kong Lingxin’s style of hospitality.
Kong Lingxin walked slowly downstairs and saw a professional woman with short, crisp hair and a business suit standing in the living room. Kong Lingxin wondered if they had met before, so she offered a smile in place of a greeting.
Seeing the smiling socialite, Wan Si was stunned. This was the exact opposite of what she had imagined. It turned out that Meng Zexiao’s wife was a woman whose smile made people feel warm, like a younger sister from next door.
Wan Si smiled and said, "Hello, Madam! My name is Wan Si, and I am Mr. Meng’s secretary. He was worried you might be bored at home, so he asked me to come and keep you company. Although this is our first meeting, I feel you have none of the airs of a wealthy socialite."
*Oh, so it’s our first meeting,* Kong Lingxin thought, feeling much more at ease.
