Chapter 3: Returning to the Meng Family Tomorrow

It was Meng Zexiao and Peng Nan, those despicable people, who indirectly caused my sister’s death!
Closing Kong Lingxin’s diary, Wang Lingyi’s fury lingered, refusing to subside. She was determined to go to the Meng family and deal with Meng Zexiao, the scoundrel who had wronged her sister, and Peng Nan, the shameless mistress!
Elsewhere, Lu Fang told Kong Changdong, “Lingyi is indeed quite remarkable. Although she grew up in a small county with a tough childhood, I observed her closely after she came to City B. She showed no stage fright at all. It was her first time riding in a BMW, first time on a plane, first time entering a villa, yet she carried herself with grace and confidence, unlike other girls who might feel awkward. So, I believe she won’t be exposed when she gets to the Meng family.”
Kong Changdong sighed, “What worries me is that Meng Zexiao might discover something when he shares a room with her…”
Lu Fang spoke firmly, “No, he won’t. We all know Meng Zexiao doesn’t like Lingxin. Otherwise, how could Lingxin still be a virgin six months into the marriage? That was Lingxin’s misfortune, but a blessing for Lingyi. If Lingyi doesn’t like Meng Zexiao, she can divorce him once our Changyue Real Estate Company recovers. We wouldn’t have her suffer this grievance if it weren’t for Tianling.”
Kong Changdong said, “I hope so. I truly worry that Lingyi might follow Lingxin’s path—falling madly in love with Meng Zexiao and risking her life for him. We can’t send both daughters into the lion’s den just to repay Li Lijuan’s kindness. What we’re doing may be selfish, but if there were other options, I wouldn’t sell my daughters like this…”
Lu Fang knew well what Kong Changdong feared. She said, “Lingyi’s greatest strength compared to Lingxin is her independence. After seeing Meng Zexiao’s sordid news, she surely won’t fall for him. Old Kong, rest assured—I’ll remind Lingyi constantly so she won’t suffer much. After all, we had children late in life, and once Tianling grows up, we’ll be too old to work. If we can’t leave him an inheritance, we’ll feel we owe him.”
Kong Changdong said, “We’ve lived upright lives for decades, yet at our age, we still prioritize securing our son’s future. Well, it can’t be helped! But you have to admit, those twin sisters look alike—even their voices sound almost identical.”
A knock at the door interrupted them. The servant came to report that dinner was ready.
Lu Fang stepped out and asked the servant, “Have you called the eldest miss?”
“Madam, yes. The eldest miss and young master are already in the dining room waiting for you and sir.”
As Kong Changdong and Lu Fang descended the stairs, they saw Lingyi and Tianling sitting on the sofa chatting. Tianling kept asking where his sister had been these past few days and why she hadn’t taken him along.
Lingyi, like Lingxin before her, patiently explained that she had left City B because she was feeling down. She hadn’t visited any famous places, only small counties, where she saw many people and things and gradually came to terms with everything.
Through Lingxin’s diary, Lingyi knew how well the Kong family treated her sister, so she spared no kindness toward them.

Seeing this harmonious scene as always, Kong Changdong felt comforted. He said to Lingyi, “Ling—Lingxin, come over, it’s time to eat.”
Wang Lingyi took Tianling’s hand and said, “Let’s go wash up and eat. Dad, Mom, we’ll be right there.”
Hearing Lingyi call them “Dad” and “Mom,” Kong Changdong and Lu Fang felt warmth fill their hearts. Their brows relaxed, and their faces bloomed with happy smiles.
The servant Gui Ma, seeing their smiles, couldn’t help but say, “Sir and Madam can finally rest easy. The young lady was out for a few days, but her mood and complexion have certainly improved.”
Wang Lingyi and Tianling approached the dining table—an elongated rectangle. Kong Changdong sat at the head, Lu Fang to his right, while Lingyi and Tianling sat to his left, opposite Lu Fang.
Lu Fang kept urging “Lingxin” to eat her food, causing Tianling to feel a bit jealous. “Mom, since my sister ran away for a few days, you seem to be favoring her more.”
Kong Changdong said, “Your sister is a treasure we thought we lost. Of course your mom will be a bit partial. But after a few more days’ rest, she’ll return to the Meng family. Then your mom won’t have anywhere left to show favoritism.”
Listening to the family’s conversation, Wang Lingyi smiled and offered Tianling some food. “Here, your favorite braised lion’s head meatballs.” (Lingxin’s diary had a detailed account of their family’s last meal, so Lingyi knew Tianling loved this dish.)
Tianling gratefully accepted and said repeatedly, “Thank you, sister.”
Wang Lingyi then looked at Kong Changdong and Lu Fang and said, “Dad, Mom, I want to return to the Meng family tomorrow.”
“Ah?!” Kong Changdong and Lu Fang were surprised and exchanged glances, unsure what Lingyi was planning.
Of course, Lingyi would never reveal her true intention—after reading Lingxin’s diary, she was eager to go to the Meng family to avenge her sister.
She said, “The Meng family has been displeased with me coming back to rest for nearly a month. If I don’t return soon, I’m afraid my mother-in-law will take it against our family.”
What Lingyi said was true. After Kong Lingxin was discharged from the hospital, she refused to return to the beach villa she shared with Meng Zexiao and insisted on going back to the Kong family. Her mother-in-law, Chen Meilan, was visibly displeased, saying that after the miscarriage, insisting on returning to her parents’ home made it seem as if the Meng family had caused it.

Hearing Lingyi’s voluntary proposal to return to the Meng family, Kong Changdong and Lu Fang, who needed the Meng family’s favor, were naturally pleased.
After dinner, Lu Fang called Chen Meilan. “Dear mother-in-law, now that Lingxin’s health has recovered, tomorrow is Saturday and Zexiao won’t have to go to the office. If he has time, could he come to the Kong residence to pick Lingxin up?”
Chen Meilan and Lu Fang had been friends for years. Although still somewhat resentful about Lingxin’s miscarriage, she did not embarrass her old friend. She said, “As long as she’s well, that’s good. Have Lingxin pack her things. I’ll have Zexiao pick her up at ten in the morning to return to the beach villa.”
Meng Zexiao had never feared anything in the world—except his father, Meng Haoquan.
The century-old Ding Sheng Group had, under Meng Haoquan’s leadership, grown into one of the top enterprises in City B and even nationwide. Meng Haoquan was a Forbes-listed figure.
Meng Haoquan had two sons and a daughter. The eldest son was Meng Zeting, and the second son was Meng Zexiao, husband to Kong Lingxin.
Meng Zeting was naturally inclined toward painting and showed no interest in business. Forced by Meng Haoquan to study business in London, England, he stayed for six months before secretly leaving to study painting in Italy.
Seeing that Meng Zeting was hopeless, Meng Haoquan poured all his energy into cultivating his second son, Meng Zexiao. Unexpectedly, Meng Zexiao proved gifted; right after graduating from university, Meng Haoquan put him in the sales department of Ding Sheng Group, where within half a year, his performance rose by ten percent.
Overall, the second son was extremely talented in business but had a rebellious personality and often behaved outrageously. Especially in romantic affairs, he frequently made front-page entertainment news alongside actresses.
Meng Haoquan was conservative; he did not want his son to marry a flashy actress. Instead, he favored Kong Lingxin, who was still a senior at City B University at the time. Though the Kong family couldn’t match the Meng family’s wealth, they were considered upper class in City B. Kong Lingxin was low-key at social events, unlike other heiresses who loved the spotlight.
Gentle, kind, beautiful, gracious, and from a respectable family, she met all the criteria Meng Haoquan sought in a daughter-in-law.
Kong Lingxin was captivated by Meng Zexiao’s handsome appearance at first sight. So when Meng Haoquan asked if she was willing to join the Meng family as his second daughter-in-law, Kong Lingxin nodded without hesitation.
