Chapter 42: The Shopkeeper and His Wife Are So Beautiful
The morning passed in the blink of an eye. As expected, the newly opened bookstore was not exactly bustling. After half a day, only a few people had come in to browse.
Among them were some customers who had placed orders the previous evening and had come to collect their books.
Lu Anzhi sat in a corner and read two chapters of the history book in his hands. At the end of the long table, the only others who had remained absorbed in their reading were the two girls.
They had already read the prequel and the first three chapters in an electronic magazine. Now they continued onward, though by noon they had read only a few more chapters.
One of the girls glanced at her watch and suddenly said, “It’s almost lunchtime. Shall we finish this chapter and head home?”
The other flipped through the remaining pages, confirming that there was not much left in the chapter they were reading, then nodded. “All right.”
Just then, the two girls suddenly noticed Lu Anzhi rising from his seat. One of them glanced at him once before lowering her eyes and continuing to read. The other, however, found herself following his figure with her gaze.
“What are you looking at? Read your book.”
The first girl was nearly finished with the page before her and was waiting to turn it, so she urged her friend impatiently.
“Uh… all right.”
The other girl blinked, coming back to herself, but still could not help turning her head for another glance.
Afterward, she turned back and continued reading.
The girl beside her waited for her and asked, “Why were you looking at him? Have you taken a fancy to him? He looks older than you.” As she spoke, she casually glanced back as well.
The moment she looked, she froze and could not help murmuring, “He’s so handsome!”
The other girl lowered her head to read. Hearing that, she could not resist taking another look. “Isn’t he? I only happened to glance at that man just now, and I saw him go over and pick up a little girl… Do you mean the little girl is beautiful, or the woman?”
Naturally, they had seen Xianxian and Zhang Suxin.
Zhang Suxin had just arrived at the shop with Xianxian. When Lu Anzhi saw them, he went over to greet them, and the little one immediately stretched out her arms, asking her father to carry her.
The three of them had no idea that this warm scene had been witnessed by the two girls reading at the end of the long table. Even if they had known, it would not have mattered.
“Both of them are beautiful.”
The girl who had blurted out the compliment withdrew her gaze and said, “Stop staring. It’s rude to keep looking at people. Read your book. We’ll go home for lunch after finishing this chapter.”
“Mm.”
The other girl nodded and lowered her eyes as well.

The two girls finished their books and left the bookstore with three copies of Dragon Clan III. At the entrance, they could not help turning back for another look. They saw the auntie behind the counter speaking with the pretty little girl, the two of them appearing quite familiar.
“Do you think… the man who was sitting across from us the whole time is the owner of the bookstore?”
After leaving Sanwei Bookstore, the two girls walked along the street, recalling what they had seen and chatting again. The girl who had first noticed Lu Anzhi asked the question.
The other girl shook her head. “I don’t know… Do you think he is?”
“It certainly looks that way. Why else would he have been sitting there the whole time? And his wife and daughter both came to the shop to see him. You probably didn’t notice, but the auntie behind the counter was extremely courteous to him.”
Strictly speaking, the woman had been respectful, but given the difference in age between Wang Ping and Lu Anzhi, the girl felt that “respectful” sounded somewhat odd.
“Then he probably is. If that’s the case, the owner and his wife are truly good-looking!”
Although Zhang Suxin was wearing a mask, both girls could tell that beneath it lay a face of breathtaking beauty, one few people could ever hope to match.
“Their daughter is pretty too.”
They walked on for a while, and before long they began discussing Dragon Clan III. Their enthusiasm grew as they speculated about what kinds of discussion threads might appear on Talker.
Later, they parted ways at an intersection. After returning home and eating dinner, they both turned on their computers and went online to check Talker.
QQ was just as popular in this life as it had been in the previous one. Whenever they surfed the Internet, they habitually opened QQ. The two girls were close friends who read together, and even their QQ nicknames were connected: one was called “Unwilling to Let the Years Pass,” and the other “No Regrets for These Years.”
As they browsed Talker, “Unwilling to Let the Years Pass” sent a message to their class QQ group:
A new bookstore has opened on Jiu’an Road. The owner and his wife are gorgeous!
It was vacation, and quite a few classmates were online with QQ running in the background. The moment the message was sent, someone in the group asked:
How gorgeous?
Unwilling to Let the Years Pass: They’re unbelievably good-looking, like movie stars!
Someone asked: Really?
Someone else replied: I don’t believe you.
Unwilling to Let the Years Pass: It’s true. If you don’t believe me, ask @No Regrets for These Years.
The girl whose nickname was “No Regrets for These Years” had only glanced at the group chat. She had been focused on browsing Talker and had no intention of joining the conversation. But after being tagged, she had no choice but to reply:
It’s true. We were reading at the bookstore, and the owner sat across from us the whole time. He’s very handsome. Later, his wife came too, bringing their daughter. She was incredibly pretty as well.
After replying, she was just about to return to Talker when she was tagged again.
Leaving Traces: What books were you reading?
“Leaving Traces” was one of their male classmates. He also enjoyed reading, and they had discussed Dragon Clan together at school before.
She had no choice but to reply again:
Dragon Clan III. It was released today.
That message brought several more people to life in the group chat.

Loveless: You actually managed to buy it?!
Angel in Black: I went to buy it at the bookstore by the school today. It was packed with people from early on, and I couldn’t get a copy at all.
Chasing the Wind: Exactly. There were none left to buy. None at all.
Loveless: It’s really that popular?
Angel’s Kiss: Yeah. Dragon Clan I and Dragon Clan II were easy enough to buy before. But III is far too popular! Why is it so hard to get?
Chasing the Wind: Exactly. It’s unbelievably popular!
Leaving Traces: Where did you buy it? What’s the name of the bookstore?
Strawberry Princess: Does that bookstore still have copies of Dragon Clan III?
“No Regrets for These Years” replied concisely:
Sanwei Bookstore. They still have copies.
“Unwilling to Let the Years Pass” added:
Sanwei Bookstore just opened on Jiu’an Road, in the place that used to be a music shop. We spent the whole morning reading there, and hardly anyone came in. If you want to buy the book, go as soon as possible. If you want one, don’t tell anyone else.
All right!
Got it!
Thanks!
Among the string of replies was one from “Chasing the Wind.”
After promising to go, “Chasing the Wind” immediately switched to another QQ group and sent a message:
Hurry to Jiu’an Road! The place that used to be a music room has become a bookstore called Sanwei Bookstore. They have Dragon Clan III in stock!
The group exploded at once.
“Chasing the Wind” did not forget to add one reminder:
Don’t tell anyone else.
Thanks to Martial Emperor of Lovesickness for the generous reward and encouragement, and thanks to everyone for continuing to read, recommending the novel, and casting monthly votes!
This humble author kneels in gratitude!
Also, the screen names in this chapter reflect the era. Please don’t complain about them.
