Chapter 62: A Single Dog Is Quite Enough
Lin Zhixiang felt somewhat relieved. Although this might bruise the girl's pride a little, at least it finally knocked her out of the competition.
Lin Chuyi had no idea there were so many hidden complications; she simply assumed that none of these people could answer, and was feeling thoroughly depressed about it.
"Eldest sister, didn't you say you weren't going to participate?"
"I am not participating," Lin Chuyi replied with a complete lack of interest.
She really hadn't expected that such a simple little question would leave everyone stumped. How dreadfully boring, simply boring.
Lin Jiuyue looked perplexedly at the utterly bored Lin Chuyi, but after a moment, she broke out in a cold sweat of embarrassment. Her eldest sister had no idea what the rules were?!
Very well, she should have guessed. The Flower Festival three years ago had been held in another town; back then, eldest sister was still too young to attend, and this year she had been entirely consumed with making money, so how could she possibly have the spare mind to figure out the rules?
Lin Chuyi let out a terribly bored yawn. The weather in early summer was already pleasantly warm, and after sitting for so long, she even began to feel a bit drowsy.
Seeing time gradually slipping away, Lin Zhixiang finally set his mind at ease. He figured that he should tell that girl about the matter soon to prevent any further complications.
"I guess the answer is 'utensils', as in the mouth of a vessel, guarded by a dog."
Finally, someone had answered!
Lin Chuyi felt a surge of joy and looked up, only to crash straight into a pair of mesmerizing, wicked eyes. The tips of her ears turned red once more, and she sheepishly replied, "Brother Mo is right."
Seeing Mo Yu step forward to answer the question, Lin Zhixiang hurriedly stood up. "Young master, you cannot."
Mo Yu shook his head, stood up, and strolled on his own accord right in front of Lin Chuyi. "I recall that some time ago, certain towns took to consuming dog meat as food, and the practice was particularly rampant. The reigning emperor was extremely furious about this and deployed a great deal of manpower and resources to handle the matter."
Lin Chuyi tilted her head back, staring blankly and stupidly at Mo Yu. Upon hearing his explanation, she felt a surge of intense fury in her heart.
Mo Yu's voice was transmitted into everyone's ears via his internal energy, and the crowd listened quietly to his narrative. Now, seeing him pause, quite a few people could not help urging him to continue.
"A utensil is a general term for ordinary wares. In the middle of the character for utensil lies the character for dog. When a farming family has no one around, a single dog is quite enough." With that, Mo Yu looked at Lin Chuyi with an inscrutable expression and smiled. "Though Chuyi's riddle was somewhat crude, her heartfelt love for dogs, as well as her kind-hearted promotion of canine welfare, are things that none of the young ladies present today can possibly compare to."
Lin Chuyi was stunned. She was truly stunned, and her face flushed crimson. She honestly never imagined that Brother Mo could come up with such... orthodox reasoning.
True, she was indeed furious at people arbitrarily capturing dogs for dog meat. But the truth was, she hadn't known a thing about the imperial crackdown beforehand, let alone been promoting any love for dogs.
She practically wanted to find a crack in the ground and crawl into it.
"Well said! Brilliantly said!" Two identical cheers rang out simultaneously, belonging precisely to Mo Yu's two young martial arts fanboys, Lin Qiyue and Mo Sang.
The two of them exchanged a murderous glare, each secretly feeling that uttering the exact same words as the other was a sheer humiliation.
Yet they also kicked off the lively spectacle, and waves of applause and cheers immediately came rolling in.
Lin Chuyi's face only turned redder. Heavens! She—she didn't have any such noble intentions at all, thank you very much! Just look at those understanding and adoring expressions on all their faces—enough was already enough!
"Young master," Lin Zhixiang called out in vexation. Now look at this mess! It seemed this girl would have to remain in the competition after all, but—but what on earth was the young master trying to pull?
Mo Yu smiled and nodded at Lin Zhixiang, signaling him to remain calm and not be impatient.
Anxious though he was, since Mo Yu had already indicated his stance, Lin Zhixiang could hardly say anything more and could only sit on the stage fretting in secret.
"Brother Mo, you—wouldn't it have been fine if you just stated the answer directly?" Lin Chuyi felt awkward for a moment before her thoughts returned to the culprit right in front of her.
