Chapter 40: Wishing You Prosperity
Mo Yu reached out and stroked the little one's cheek, the smooth, soft texture beneath his fingers bringing him immense delight.
Before the girl could speak again, Lin Zhixiang said in a deep voice, "September, hurry up and take your brother to your seat. Master Mo is a guest; why are you following along with this nonsense?"
Lin September pouted, looking troubled. "But I haven't finished what Big Sister told me to do yet."
Lin Zhixiang sighed and rubbed his forehead in exasperation. This girl—instructing her younger siblings to go and ask someone for money? He couldn't believe she had come up with such a thing.
"You listen to everything she says, but you won't listen to a word I say!"
Lin September hummed, turning her head away. Her intention was clear: she was determined to carry out her eldest sister's mission.
Mo Yu smiled and waved his hand. "It is no trouble." He turned his attention back to the little one clutching his hand and asked softly, "What is your name?"
"Hello, Brother. My name is Lin May. I'm two and a half years old. Wishing you prosperity!" A soft, milky voice came from the little one.
Mo Yu chuckled. "Wishing you prosperity?"
"Hello." Mo Yu couldn't resist stroking the child's cheek again before slipping a piece of silver into the small pouch hanging around the little one's neck.
"May is such a sweet talker," the others at the two tables observed, looking at the child with affection.
Lin Zhixiang also shook his head with a smile; he doted on his youngest son immensely.
"Thank you, Brother," the little one said with a sweet smile.
Finally, it was Lin September's turn. "Hello, Brother. My name is Lin September."
"Hello." Mo Yu smiled again and handed over another tael of silver. However, he was curious: all these children were named after months—was there some special meaning behind it?
Once everyone had received their silver and returned to their seats, Lin Zhixiang asked with a puzzled expression, "Where is your eldest sister?"
"Oh! I almost forgot!" Lin September tapped her forehead, looking annoyed. Seeing everyone staring at her, she blushed slightly. "Big Sister said if it was successful, I should give her a signal."
Mo Yu was stunned. If it wasn't successful, she wasn't going to show up at all?
Lin Zhixiang waved his hand helplessly. "Go on, then."
Lin September placed Lin May in his high chair and ran to the door. "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!"
The corner of Mo Yu's mouth twitched. She was giving the signal right here? Everyone had already seen her; how could that even be called a signal?
Clearly, he wasn't the only one left speechless. Lin July couldn't bear to watch. He had been hoping to play matchmaker between Brother Mo and Chuyi, but now, this was a disaster. Surely, she had made a terrible first impression. And Brother Mo was so remarkable and handsome, too... well, never mind.
The moment Lin September’s voice faded, Lin Chuyi jumped out almost instantly.
"Ah, Big Sister!" Lin September cried out in alarm, startled by Lin Chuyi's sudden appearance.
Lin Chuyi chuckled, took Lin September’s hand, and walked over to the table to sit down. "Brother Mo, my name is Lin Chuyi!"
She extended a fair, delicate hand with a grin, her intent perfectly obvious.
Mo Yu’s mouth twitched again. This girl was joining in on the antics too!
"I know your name is Lin Chuyi," Mo Yu nodded solemnly, pretending not to understand.
"Chuyi, hurry up and sit down. You're a grown woman now; don't you know how to behave?"
Lin Chuyi’s attention was instantly diverted. "Father, how many times have I told you? Don't call me 'Chu'! Why do you keep doing it?"
Except for Mo Yu, who remained confused, the rest of the group burst into laughter.
Lin Chuyi sat down with a thud, gritting her teeth. She could almost cry. Why was she the only one with a pet name? And a name like "Chu" at that...
Lin Zhixiang waved his hand with a smile. "Everyone, let's eat."
