Chapter 20: Beware of Becoming an Old Maid
Before Lin Qiyue could speak, Lin Chuyi waved dismissively, “It’s such a small matter, don’t take it to heart. If you really feel bad about it, just give some compensation for mental distress.”
As she spoke, excitement lit up her eyes, which sparkled as they fixated on Mo Yu’s pouch of money. The longing in her gaze was almost unbearable to look at.
Mo Yu’s lips twitched involuntarily. It was the first time he had met someone who could so naturally talk about money, especially someone who hadn’t yet been tainted by the scent of copper coins.
Lin Qiyue helplessly twitched the corner of her mouth. “Don’t mind her, she’s just like that.”
“No matter,” Lin Chuyi said.
Lin Chuyi glared unhappily. Like that, like this—what exactly did that mean? Hmph, as if I love money that much.
Lin Chuyi’s muttered complaint was overheard by Lin Qiyue, who couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth again. Aren’t you really the one who loves money most…?
Thanks to Lin Qiyue’s interruption, Lin Chuyi momentarily forgot about the compensation for mental distress, for now her whole being was captivated by the golden roast chicken turning over in the fire.
The rich aroma of roasted meat wafted through the air. Lin Chuyi stared eagerly at the chicken as it ‘flipped’ in the flames, unconsciously swallowing her saliva.
---
Noticing Lin Chuyi’s small gesture, Mo Yu’s lips curled slightly. He suddenly felt she resembled a large feline, now earnestly begging her master for food.
The roast chicken was finally done under Lin Chuyi’s longing gaze. She was about to reach out to grab it when Lin Qiyue stopped her hand.
Lin Chuyi bristled, ready to protest, but Lin Qiyue was quicker.
“Are your hands made of steel? You can’t just grab freshly roasted food with your bare hands so recklessly. Be careful or you won’t get married in the future.”
With that, Lin Qiyue calmly walked over and sat beside Mo Yu, smiling at him, signaling that they still had to wait a moment.
Mo Yu nodded, his eyes shining brightly in the firelight.
Catching the key point, Lin Chuyi came over to Lin Qiyue. “Why wouldn’t I get married? You little brat, how dare you curse me!”
Lin Qiyue twitched the corner of his mouth and rolled his eyes, but quickly reined it in—after all, he had to maintain his perfect image in front of others!
“Where exactly is your point?” Fine, marriage is important too, but given the situation, the main point was clearly what I just said!
Women were indeed unreasonable when throwing a tantrum. Lin Chuyi grabbed Lin Qiyue’s sleeve, refusing to relent. “Hmph, if I don’t get married, I’ll just cling to you for life.”
---
Lin Qiyue was shaken like a rattle, swaying left and right. “No, don’t, that would be disastrous for me.”
Seeing this, Mo Yu’s brow twitched, his expression turning peculiarly strange.
Lin Chuyi shook even harder, and in the end, Lin Qiyue’s hand slipped—the golden roast chicken tumbled to the ground. Both their mouths formed an ‘O’ shape in shock; it was already too late to save it.
It was over.
That word surfaced simultaneously in their minds.
Just as they were filled with heartache, regret, and frustration, expecting the heavy object to hit the ground, nothing came.
Opening their eyes, they saw Mo Yu holding the chicken steadily in his hands, but his expression was extremely odd—partly disdainful, partly troubled, and somehow else entirely.
“Isn’t it hot?” Lin Chuyi finally asked sheepishly after holding back for a long time.
Mo Yu shook his head. “I am a martial artist; this level of heat is no match for me.” He said as he presented the chicken to Lin Qiyue. “I have used internal energy to temper the heat; it is ready to eat.”
