Volume One, Chapter Six: Come to My Place

Liang Zhijin had grown tired of living in poverty. Ignoring her parents’ objections, she sold everything to study abroad. Fortune smiled upon her; she found a boyfriend soon after arriving who supported her financially, sparing her from taking on dirty, exhausting part-time jobs. However, her boyfriend’s money was insufficient for the grand life she desired. Unsatisfied, when a better opportunity presented itself, she did not hesitate to leave without a word, abandoning four years of relationship effortlessly.
Wan Yan lowered his head and smiled, “Because of that, you even abandoned the boyfriend you were about to marry.”
Liang Zhijin felt a pang of guilt but quickly composed herself to retort, “I’m just a mundane person. I want a good life. I don’t want my children to want something and for me to check my wallet only to find no money.”
She said, “A Yan, you and I are the same kind of person. We benefit each other. Compared to Lu Chaoxi, I’m the one who suits you best.”
Their dignity and souls resonated deeply—they knew what it felt like to hold each other close on a snowy winter night without fire or shelter from the wind.
Wan Yan said nothing. Liang Zhijin waited quietly for his response.
In the silence, the inside line rang.
“Sir, Madam and Miss Luo are here, riding the elevator upstairs.”
Wan Yan had turned on the speaker, so Liang Zhijin heard clearly. A calculating gleam flickered in her eyes.
Estimating when Lu Chaoxi would arrive, she leaned provocatively close to Wan Yan, hands gripping the edge of the desk.
“By the way, A Yan, it’s your birthday today. Come to my place. I’ll cook your favorite dishes.”
Wan Yan smiled faintly, “Your place? Isn’t your place taken over by Lu Chaoxi? What exactly belongs to you?”
The office door opened from outside. Lu Chaoxi entered, carrying a cake and smiling brightly. She saw the scene and her smile quickly stiffened.
Luo Ci followed with a mocking tone, “Look, see how this phoenix man can’t keep faithful? You didn’t believe me, did you?”
Lu Chaoxi angrily rushed forward and pulled Liang Zhijin away, gently placing the cake on the desk before starting her tantrum.
“Wan Yan, you smile at her? You’ve hardly ever smiled at me!”
Luo Ci was surprised by the misplaced focus. “Isn’t... Lu Chaoxi, you’re looking at this the wrong way!”
Liang Zhijin doubted her own hearing. She had heard that this young lady was obsessed with Wan Yan to the point of losing herself, but she never imagined it was this pathetic.
Wan Yan seemed used to it. He glanced at the cake Lu Chaoxi brought, his eyes darkening as he said to Liang Zhijin, “You, leave.”
Faced with Wan Yan’s warning, Liang Zhijin stopped scheming, nodded, and left.
However, as she reached the door, the sharp-eyed Luo Ci blocked her path, pointing excitedly.
“It’s her! Chaoxi, this is the woman who ruined your wedding!”

Luo Ci grabbed Liang Zhijin’s wrist, cursing, “You shameless mistress! Now you come to the Lu household to show off? What position did Wan Yan give you? Personal secretary?”
Luo Ci had once been so obsessed with martial arts movies that she went to Hong Kong to train and had built up considerable strength.
Liang Zhijin felt her wrist about to be crushed, her delicate face contorted in pain. She turned to Wan Yan for help.
“A Yan, make her let go, it hurts!”
Upon hearing those words, Lu Chaoxi’s eyes instantly reddened. She looked at Wan Yan, both aggrieved and angry.
Wan Yan frowned at the noise, telling Lu Chaoxi coldly, “She’s pregnant. Let her go.”
Lu Chaoxi wanted to shout and curse, “Pregnant? So what if she’s pregnant! She seduced another man’s husband, and she still has the nerve!”
But saying that would make her a shrew defeated by marriage. She didn’t want to be that. She had promised to be a wife worthy of Wan Yan.
Taking a deep breath, Lu Chaoxi gloomily said to Luo Ci, “Luo, let her go. She’s pregnant.”
Luo Ci was shocked. “Lu Chaoxi, you’re so generous? You say ‘let go’ and just let her?”
“Luo!” Lu Chaoxi raised her voice, “I’ll handle this. Let go now.”
Luo Ci released Liang Zhijin’s hand with a flick and strode off. “Fine, I’m done with this!”
Lu Chaoxi wanted to chase after Luo Ci, but Wan Yan held her back, and she could only watch Luo Ci storm away.
Wan Yan’s gaze signaled Liang Zhijin to leave.
The noisy office suddenly fell silent, leaving only the two of them.
Wan Yan was somewhat surprised that Lu Chaoxi hadn’t asked about Liang Zhijin.
He spoke first, “You’re not going to ask me?”
Lu Chaoxi looked at him with a mournful glare, “Of course I am. Why do you smile at her?”
Wan Yan’s eye twitched. He pinched her cheek, sincerely saying, “Does amnesia cause brain atrophy? You might be the best person to answer that.”
Since their engagement two years ago, Lu Chaoxi’s possessiveness had been intense. Because of insecurity, she would get jealous and angry at any woman near him.
Now she wasn’t so much a resentful woman anymore, but Wan Yan found it strange.
Lu Chaoxi opened her mouth to bite his hand, but he quickly withdrew it.

“Luo told me she’s the one who ruined our wedding. I care a lot. Very much!”
Lu Chaoxi’s current demeanor finally showed a glimpse of the familiar side Wan Yan knew. He worried that if she changed too much, she would become hard to control.
Wan Yan’s expression softened slightly. “Did Luo also tell you that the child Liang Zhijin is carrying is mine?”
Lu Chaoxi nodded repeatedly. “She did, but I don’t believe it.”
Wan Yan grew curious. “Why not?”
Rarely had he been intrigued by Lu Chaoxi’s words—today was the second time.
Without hesitation, Lu Chaoxi answered, “Because you wouldn’t do that. If she was truly the one you liked, you wouldn’t have married me.”
The bright sunshine that had long been absent from her face shone briefly, making Wan Yan momentarily dazed.
She then tiptoed and whispered, “Wan Yan, I know you well. I believe you will fall in love with me.”
Her words were so certain and confident, matching the tone Wan Yan had used when he resolutely said, “She went to see my mother.”
“I won’t fall in love with you.”
Wan Yan instinctively denied it, then told her, “The child in Liang Zhijin’s womb is mine.”
In his heart, he was wary of Lu Chaoxi’s words. His denial was also a warning to himself.
Since he wrested the knife from Lu Chaoxi’s hand at the wedding, he noticed his moods and actions had been influenced by her lately.
“I’m not listening!” Lu Chaoxi quickly covered her ears as he spoke, “If I don’t hear it, it’s like you never said it!”
Afterward, she took out the cake, trying to change the subject.
“Almost forgot, I’m here to bring you cake.”
Wan Yan was already impatient. “I’m not having a birthday.”
He had never celebrated a birthday—not once—because his mother forbade him to mention the word “birthday.”
As a child, he saw other kids celebrating with cake and new clothes and couldn’t help but ask his mother about it.
