Volume One, Chapter 13: Are You Questioning Me Because of Lu Chaoxi?

Song Yin and the others were seeing Wan Yan home from the company. The moment they saw him emerge from the elevator, they opened the car door and waited.
Just as Wan Yan was getting into the car and about to close the door, a shadow flashed past Song Yin. The next second, Lu Chaoxi darted into the vehicle.
Now Song Yin was caught in an awkward dilemma, unable either to close the door or leave it open, frozen outside with nowhere to go.
Lu Chaoxi sat in the car, panting so hard she could barely catch her breath, yet she still remembered to help Song Yin shut the door.
Wan Yan’s face darkened at once. “Lu Chaoxi, what are you doing?”
The car had already begun to move slowly, and ink marks still streaked Lu Chaoxi’s face. With a solemn air, she declared, “Escorting President Wan home!”
Wan Yan gave a cold laugh and exposed her immediately. “You’re the greatest danger here.”
Lu Chaoxi instantly began pounding his shoulders and flattering him. “I’ll live for President Wan, die for President Wan, and devote myself body and soul to President Wan!”
Her expression was so resolute, as though she were marching to her death, that even Song Yin, who was driving, felt the corner of his mouth twitch.
Then Lu Chaoxi’s eyes shifted, and she added in Wan Yan’s ear, “And warm President Wan’s bed.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Wan Yan seized her cheeks with one hand.
Lu Chaoxi was forced to pout.
Seeing that she did not understand, Wan Yan made her look at her own reflection in the car window.
At the same time, he cut her down mercilessly. “I’m not so desperate that I’ll take just any ugly woman.”
Lu Chaoxi quickly wiped her face clean, then leaned toward him and blinked expectantly. “What about now?”
“Still worse than an ugly woman.”
The sight of the two of them leaving together in the same car happened to be witnessed in its entirety by Liang Zhijin.
A sense of crisis rose within her.
Perhaps Wan Yan had already forgotten the promise he once made—the fact that his marriage to Lu Chaoxi had been intended as an act of revenge.
And every change had begun when Lu Chaoxi lost her memory.
As someone who had placed every wager on Wan Yan, how could Liang Zhijin allow anything outside the plan to happen?
She gripped a wrinkled business card tightly in her hand. She had found it in the trash can in Wan Yan’s office.
Zhi Zheng’s business card.
Using the number printed on it, Liang Zhijin dialed the phone...
“Mr. Wan Yan? You certainly called quickly.”
The man on the other end sounded hoarse from catching a chill, but that did nothing to diminish his calm, amused chuckle, as though he had known all along that this call would come.

“I’m A-Yan’s secretary.” Liang Zhijin deliberately made her wording ambiguous. “Mr. Zhi, how about we make a deal?”
“I’m listening.”
The moment she got home, Lu Chaoxi hurried into her room and did not come out again.
Though Wan Yan wondered what she was plotting this time, he showed nothing on his face and did not bother asking.
After all, it was rare for Lu Chaoxi not to bounce around in front of him. He could finally enjoy some peace.
At dinner, Wan Yan came out of the study in his loungewear and entered the dining room, yet he still did not see Lu Chaoxi anywhere.
After sitting down, he finally could not help asking the servant, “Where’s Madam?”
“I just knocked on Madam’s door,” the servant replied, “only to discover that she wasn’t in her room.”
Lu Chaoxi wasn’t in her room?
Thinking of how strange she had been after returning home, Wan Yan felt an inexplicable sense of foreboding.
Just as he was trying to determine when she had left, his phone chimed with a new message.
It contained a photograph of Lu Chaoxi getting into a car outside the entrance to the Steinway apartment. The image clearly captured the person in the driver’s seat.
It was the secretary of Zhi Zheng—the man Wan Yan had seen at the company that day.
After glancing at the sender, Wan Yan immediately called them. At the same time, he rose to go after Lu Chaoxi. He left without even changing his clothes or shoes.
“A-Yan, did you miss me?”
Liang Zhijin’s delighted voice came from the other end of the line.
Wan Yan stared intently at the numbers on the elevator display as they descended one by one. His reply was brief and to the point. “Tell me the reason and the motive.”
Liang Zhijin was silent for several seconds. “Are you interrogating me because of Lu Chaoxi?”
“Wan Yan, I didn’t come back from abroad to watch Lu Chaoxi thaw the heart you sealed off! Do you still remember what you promised me?”
Wan Yan merely assumed that pregnancy hormones had affected her and that she was spouting nonsense about things that had never happened.
The notion that he had developed feelings for Lu Chaoxi was absurd.
“I need Lu Chaoxi to stabilize the Lu Corporation, and I need the shares in her hands.”
Wan Yan chose the fastest car and got inside. His voice was stern and cold. “Zhijin, you’d better not do anything outside the plan again. I won’t forgive you a second time.”
After saying that, he tossed the phone aside, slammed his foot on the accelerator, and sped off in pursuit.
Furious and unwilling to accept this, Liang Zhijin smashed her phone onto the floor.
She knew Wan Yan was not joking, which only made her angrier.

As long as Lu Chaoxi refused to step aside, Liang Zhijin could not give the child in her womb a legitimate identity.
Liang Zhijin would never allow her child to become an illegitimate child despised by everyone.
She made up her mind: before the child was born, she would eliminate Lu Chaoxi.
No matter what it took.
Lu Chaoxi had no idea how many people were keeping an eye on her. At that moment, she was sitting in the car, concentrating on protecting the bag in her arms.
In fact, she had overheard the conversation between Wan Yan and Zhi Zheng’s secretary from outside the door.
At the time, she had wanted to grab a chair and charge in to smash the man over the head!
Her relationship with Wan Yan had only just begun to ease, and now this Zhi Zheng—who knew where he had come from—kept making unpredictable moves.
Lu Chaoxi had carefully searched her memories, but she had never encountered anyone named Zhi Zheng.
In her view, rather than saying that he was targeting Wan Yan because he could not have the man he loved, it would be more accurate to say that he had dragged her into this merely to humiliate Wan Yan.
Lu Chaoxi wanted to find out whether Zhi Zheng’s real targets were the Lu Corporation and Wan Yan.
Whenever something concerned Wan Yan, she somehow became much smarter.
But Wan Yan would certainly never believe her suspicions. After all, Zhi Zheng’s actions on the surface had all been directed at her.
That was why Lu Chaoxi had decided to investigate Zhi Zheng’s background alone. She had locked herself in her room the moment she returned home precisely so she could devise a plan.
Her bag was now packed with pepper spray, a stun gun, and anything else she could possibly use against Zhi Zheng.
Lu Chaoxi’s plan was simple: knock him unconscious the moment they met, then bind him hand and foot, strip him naked, and take photos and videos!
She would use them to force Zhi Zheng to reveal his true intentions. If he refused, she would expose everything to the media.
People in high society feared scandals more than anything.
After perfecting the final details of her plan in her mind, the car suddenly slammed on the brakes. Her head struck the back of the seat with a solid thud.
“Miss Lu, are you all right?”
After bringing the car to a stop, the secretary was still shaken and immediately checked on Lu Chaoxi in the back seat.
Lu Chaoxi clutched her aching forehead. Just as she was about to ask what had happened, she saw Wan Yan stepping out of the car that had blocked their path.
His face dark, he strode to the car door. He yanked several times at the handle, but the door was locked from inside and would not open, making his anger burn even hotter.
“Lu Chaoxi, get out!”
