Chapter 19: Catching the Adulterer
Liu Weidong played the part convincingly, looking like someone who had never seen the world.
The old lady laughed, “We can’t be too picky about people, but a girl wearing a red dress every day, showing her bare thighs, even I feel embarrassed just watching.”
“Li Hong’s home is in that brick house back there, which is the commune’s dormitory allocated to the leaders. There are barely enough for the commune cadres, so how could a substitute primary school teacher like her get to live there?”
At that point, the old lady stopped herself.
Though her words were tinged with envy and jealousy, they rang true. If Li Hong lived in the leader’s quarters, who would believe she had no connection with the commune leadership?
“Thank you, ma’am. If it weren’t for your reminder, I’d have been a complete fool,” Liu Weidong sighed as he got up, thanked her, and headed back.
But Liu Weidong wasn’t truly leaving. Instead, he slipped into the poplar grove by the road and lay on the grass, lost in thought.
Li Baotian knew him; it was impossible to approach during the day. But Li Hong didn’t know him. As long as he knew where Li Hong lived, at night...
Liu Weidong felt inside his handbag for his camera and revealed a sly smile.
If only he had a cellphone, it would be easy. With this camera, he’d have to use the flash at night. He wondered how well Li Hong’s doors and windows were sealed.
As the sun began to set in the west, Liu Weidong spat out a blade of grass, stood, and went to the roadside, watching from afar as students began to leave the central school.
Hiding behind a tree, he finally saw a woman in a red dress riding a 26-inch bicycle coming his way.
She passed right in front of Liu Weidong, heading toward the brick house. He was certain—this woman was Li Hong.
In an era when everyone wore dark blues and grays, with collars buttoned up tight, she wore a bright red dress, exposing her fair legs, truly eye-catching.
No wonder she was the talk of the commune’s tea-time gossip. Li Hong was indeed quite beautiful, with a well-proportioned figure and fair skin. In those days, she even permed her hair and wore a hair clip, dressing like a movie star.
A substitute teacher earning only seventeen and a half yuan a month—how could she afford a Forever brand bicycle? Her clothes were also fashionable and new; her salary alone wouldn’t suffice.
When Li Hong turned into an alley, Liu Weidong casually strolled toward the brick house and saw the Forever bike parked inside a small courtyard.
He even circled around to the back of Li Hong’s house. The rear window was small, making it clear that if he wanted to catch them in the act, he’d have to enter through the front door.
He dared not linger on the street, so he slipped back into the poplar grove.
His stomach growled with hunger. Only when the moon was high did he stealthily approach Li Hong’s house.
The commune dormitory was secluded—surrounded by large vegetable fields and a hundred meters from the village road. As he neared the bungalow, all the houses were dark. Sure enough, he spotted a 28-inch bike in Li Hong’s courtyard.
Liu Weidong’s heart pounded wildly. That bastard Li Baotian, deputy director of the commune’s youth office, was actually having an affair with a youth sent down to the countryside. This time, he was going to make him pay dearly.
Liu Weidong circled the building and was surprised to find two families living in one wing, separated by a considerable distance, which made him even bolder.
---
He jumped over the fence. Curtains hung on the windows, and when Liu Weidong pressed close, he could hear soft snoring inside.
He looked around, bent down to pick up a stick, and quietly crept to the door.
He pulled the door, finding it bolted inside. Taking a pencil knife from his pocket, he slipped the blade through the door jamb and fiddled with the latch until it gave way.
As he gently opened the door, a strong smell of cheap liquor wafted out. No wonder Li Baotian and Li Hong were sleeping so soundly—they were drunk.
The entryway was small, and the bedroom door was wide open. Using the moonlight, Liu Weidong took out his camera, attached the flash, and slowly stepped into the bedroom.
Despite the curtains, the room was not dark. On the kang bed were two pale bodies tightly entwined, the floral quilt tossed to the floor.
Quite the party, huh?
Damn it, Li Baotian. Not only will I show these photos to the commune leaders, but I’ll also make Liu Xiufen take a good look.
He raised the camera and pressed the shutter. The flash went off twice, and a scream echoed from the bed.
“Who’s—there’s a bad person—help...!”
The cry woke Li Baotian as well.
Who—
Before he could finish, Liu Weidong struck him on the head with the stick.
He knocked Li Baotian down and then switched on the light.
Suddenly illuminated, both Li Hong and Li Baotian squinted.
Li Hong curled up at the edge of the kang, hugging her chest, trembling with fear.
Liu Weidong snapped a few more photos, hung the camera around his neck, and raised the stick again.
Li Baotian, dazed from the blow and bleeding down his face, adjusted to the light and saw who it was. Seeing Liu Weidong raise the stick, he screamed in terror.
“Liu Weidong, what do you want? Think about the consequences! You’re trespassing and assaulting a commune leader. I’m going to—ah!”
Liu Weidong ignored him, swinging the stick in a brutal assault. The grievances from his past life and the hardships since his rebirth fueled his relentless fury.
“Stop... stop hitting me, big brother... if you keep going, someone will die...”
Li Hong was crying, terrified. This man had definitely come for revenge. If he killed Li Baotian, would he silence her too?
After a few blows, Li Baotian stopped moving. Liu Weidong finally ceased and tossed a quilt at Li Hong, then grabbed a half bottle of white liquor from the table and poured it over Li Baotian’s head.
Ah...
Li Baotian screamed in pain, rolling on the kang.
Liu Weidong packed the camera back into his handbag and pulled out a bundle of hemp rope.
“You two filthyI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
