Unexpectedly, the person on the other end was a woman, and Gu Liuyun was momentarily taken aback.

“Hello?” the woman on the other side asked again.

Only then did Gu Liuyun regain his composure. “Yes, it’s me.”

There was a long silence on the other end. “Gu Liuyun?”

Gu Liuyun frowned. “You know me?”

The woman let out a soft laugh. “I knew it. Given your temper, you wouldn’t easily back out of this matter without a fight.”

“Since you reached out first, let’s meet in person,” Gu Liuyun said without hesitation.

He arrived at the café she had chosen and immediately picked a seat by the window.

Not long after, a woman in a white dress walked in.

Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, her figure graceful. As she walked, her slender legs crossed delicately, causing the hem of her dress to flutter like a playful little sprite.

She became a striking sight, drawing the eyes of passersby.

When she appeared, Gu Liuyun felt a warmth in his chest, as if something inside him—the fragment of the Ascension Stone—was resonating, calling out to him.

Lost in thought, he barely noticed the woman in the white dress now standing before him. She elegantly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sat opposite him.

“Brother Yun, we meet again,” she said.

As she moved, the jade pendant around her neck caught the light.

It was a fragment of the Ascension Stone!

Gu Liuyun was startled but maintained a calm exterior, masking his emotions. “Who are you?”

The woman smiled. “I’m Bai Xiyu.”

She seemed to know him intimately, which made him uneasy.

“Have you been spying on me?”

Bai Xiyu waved off the suggestion. “You really don’t remember anything? I’m your sister Bai.”

She blinked innocently, looking both naive and charming.

The nickname sounded familiar. Gu Liuyun narrowed his eyes slightly, and memories of a cheerful little girl with two small braids overlapped with the woman before him.

Bai Xiyu was the second daughter of the Bai family, his childhood playmate. They had been neighbors until the age of ten, but after some upheaval, her family moved away from his city, and they lost contact.

“What, after ten years apart, you’ve grown distant? Back then, our uncles and aunts wanted you to marry me when we grew up,” Bai Xiyu pouted, looking somewhat aggrieved.

“I already have a fiancée,” Gu Liuyun said coldly.

Although he once knew Bai Xiyu, he remained cautious.

Everything felt too coincidental. Bai Xiyu’s sudden appearance at this moment was no accident.

“My family is also an ancient martial cultivation lineage, so we’re well aware of the prominent figures in the immortal cultivation world,” Bai Xiyu said with a faint smile.

“Or are you still upset because I moved away without saying goodbye?”

Under the table, Gu Liuyun felt Bai Xiyu’s leg pressed close to his, her body heat almost tangible. Their skin was tantalizingly close, creating a strange and irresistible sensation.

“That’s all in the past,” Gu Liuyun said lightly, taking a sip of his coffee.

“From what I know, the group that attacked you is an organization of evil cultivators, but their target isn’t you. As long as you don’t interfere, they won’t strike again,” Bai Xiyu explained.

Gu Liuyun frowned.

Not retaliating when attacked was not his style.

“But I know, Brother Yun, you’re not one to hide away, so I came to find you,” Bai Xiyu continued earnestly.

“When we moved away, it was because we were being pursued by these evil cultivators. Over the years, we’ve been investigating them but know very little. What I’m certain of is that your parents’ disappearance is closely linked to these people...”

Gu Liuyun took a deep breath, his hand tightening involuntarily.

“I’ll help you,” Bai Xiyu said softly, placing her delicate hand over his.

As she leaned closer, the exquisite jade pendant appeared before Gu Liuyun’s eyes once again.

Why did she have a fragment of the Ascension Stone?

Noticing Gu Liuyun’s gaze fixed on her pendant, Bai Xiyu blushed, cheeks blooming with color. “Brother Yun, what are you looking at?”

Gu Liuyun snapped back to reality. “Oh, nothing. Your necklace is special, so I just glanced a little longer.”

Bai Xiyu touched the jade pendant at her neck, a trace of sorrow flickering in her beautiful eyes. “Thanks to this pendant, I might have already died otherwise.”

She had been weak and chronically ill since childhood, on the verge of death, until one day this glowing jade fell into the courtyard of the Bai family villa.

“It’s strange, but ever since I started wearing it, my illness has miraculously improved.”

The energy contained within the Ascension Stone was immense; it was not unusual for it to prolong life.

However...

To restore the Ascension Stone, every fragment was indispensable. If that happened, Bai Xiyu...

Gu Liuyun couldn’t help but feel pity.

After learning the general situation from Bai Xiyu, he escorted her home.

“Brother Yun.”

Just as Gu Liuyun was about to leave, Bai Xiyu called out to him.

He turned around, and Bai Xiyu’s lips lightly brushed his cheek like a dragonfly’s touch, fleeting and gentle.

Before Gu Liuyun could react, she shyly ran away.

“That little girl...” Gu Liuyun watched her retreating figure, smiling indulgently.

Elsewhere.

The Ye family.

Ye Qingqing sat quietly before her dressing table, lost in thought as she brushed her hair.

Because of her repeated lapses earlier, Ye Xifu had ordered her confined to her room, forbidding her from leaving.

In just a few days, she had fallen from the sky’s favored daughter to a useless puddle of mud.

Why?

What had gone wrong?

She couldn’t understand it.

Ye Manman was clearly inferior to her in every way!

Gu Liuyun used to be a worthless nobody!

Why were they treating her like this?

The comb’s teeth pierced her palm, blood flowing freely, yet Ye Qingqing felt no pain.

“What exquisite prey,” came a man’s voice from outside the window.

“Who’s there?” Ye Qingqing warned, standing up immediately and putting distance between them.

The man pushed open the window and entered her chamber without hesitation.

“Miss, do you remember me?”

Ye Qingqing’s eyes narrowed, her expression complex. “You... why are you here?”

The man smiled, flicking his long fingers, producing a black magical artifact, which he held out to her.

“I’m here today to help you solve your troubles, Miss.”

Ye Qingqing frowned, staring at the object in his hand but hesitated to take it.

“Don’t worry. This is a great aid for your cultivation. Once you use it, you’ll soon come to love it,” the man said persistently, grabbing her wrist and forcing the artifact into her hand.
